Chris Hipkins has overtaken Christopher Luxon as the preferred Prime Minister in the latest Taxpayers’ Union-Curia Poll, marking a shift in political momentum as the centre-left bloc increases its lead.
The poll shows Labour, the Greens, and Te Pāti Māori could form a government, while support for the National-led bloc has slipped.
Party support breakdown:
• Labour: 34.1% (+2.8)
• National: 33.6% (+1.7)
• Greens: 10.0% (-3.2)
• ACT: 7.7% (-2.3)
• NZ First: 5.1% (-1.3)
• Te Pāti Māori: 6.5% (+2.1)
Based on these results, the centre-left bloc would hold 62 seats, enough to form a government. Meanwhile, the centre-right bloc has dropped to 58 seats, meaning National and ACT would not have the numbers to govern even with the support of New Zealand First.
The biggest headline from the poll is the preferred Prime Minister rankings, where Hipkins has climbed 3.1 points to 20.7%, surpassing Luxon, who has dropped to 20.3% (-0.4 points).
This marks the first time since the 2023 election that Hipkins has overtaken Luxon as the most preferred choice for Prime Minister—a rare feat for an Opposition Leader outside of an election period.
Meanwhile, economic issues remain a key concern for voters. A previous poll by Curia found strong public support for policies focused on boosting tourism, attracting more international students, and cutting taxes to drive economic growth.

Luxon promised change. It hasn't happened and won't happen under his leadership. National has become Labour Lite focussed on retaining and growing co-governance. I don't rate the economy as my No.1 concern. It's not about the money. I'm more concerned with the rapid development of the apartheid state. If Luxon's not going to do it you might as well vote for the real Labour Party and have done with it!
I dont like Luxon....I think they should swap him out for Judith. I also reckon we should all stop looking at National and Labour for our main parties and only options....I dont understand why we have got so stuck there as a country. BUT....if we end up with Hipkins, Chloe, and TPM, I am actually leaving though I love my country. A coalition with those 3 will be the absolute ruin of us all.
Whilst the Labour spin doctors and media pens for hire go into overdrive, Luxon and his ministers keep their heads down and their derrieres up, making the changes required for Kiwis to prosper.
The media are upset because there is no "agenda pushing" public money coming their way.
Some big business leaders are upset because Luxon and his team are putting the conditions in place to increase competition and decrease costs / profits.
The Labour hierarchy are upset because it will be at least 8 years before they can funnel our hard earned tax dollars off into their personal foundations.
John Tamahere is upset because his Whanau Ora gravy train has been switched off.
Cam Slater is upset because he's being paid to be upset.
But Luxon and his team stay calm, secure in the knowledge that their hard work will make voters lives better in election year and for decades beyond.
New Zealanders....like turkeys voting for Christmas! National or Labour. A couple of things need to be done. The Broadcasting Minister needs to ensure we have a more balanced media. Those of us who stopped watching and listening to the MSM would have a better grasp of the Treaty Principles Bill. Secondly, the Maori seats are now totally undemocratic as Maori have more than adequate parliamentary representation. I believe that with the biased media, poor conservative leadership, a combination of Labour, The Maori Party and The Green Party tribal rule and co-governance is now inevitable. ACT and NZF need to step up big time.
What is more interesting/alarming is that act and nz first have not climbed in the polls. I think many of the fed up centre have already left nz. Many people I know do not read sites like this one and are quite unaware of what a left coalition will mean. For example if you tell them about the first right of refusal policy on private land, they don't believe you.
I thought the poll was a con until I saw the stuff poll where readers could click on who they would vote for right now. Labour was at 47%, greens were 17 % and national was at 14%. So that is even worse than the curia poll
Middle class NZers voted in National and Luxon to roll back quickly the creeping Maorification and divisive racist agenda of Labour and the Greens. Not only has he done bugger all after more than one year, Luxon has actually sided with them on many an occasion ! Might as well vote Labour and be done with the decline of NZ into 2nd world Aotearoa.
Good news is that Australia has its welcome mat for hard working, experienced and professional NZers - let NZ go to the dogs.
Has anyone looked at the error margins? 3.1%. So, the reality is nothing whatsoever has changed.
Why the Coailtion tipped $50 million into Insurrection Coordination Centres (marae) is beyond me.It simply bought the vast number of indoctrinated non thinkers in the recent hikoi. And so increased the cancellation power and influence over others.
To Anon at 7.44 yes, they do not believe you. Or me. On this and many things because as they tell me , if it was true it would be on TV One and Three and on Stuff and in the Herald. There are many who do still trust the media and see it as truthful, socking it to the ''rich'' etc, battling for the victims. A solid 40 odd percent of voters and a new batch coming for the local body and general election next year. They do see it as kindness and caring v selfish rich so and sos. Material to the contrary is racist, fascist blah blah . The last general election was closer than many thought. Sure Labour's vote dropped but when the Greens and TPM were added they still topped 40pc...it was not a landslide overall, just against Labour. The local body elections in a few months will see a new lot of voters emerging from schools and unis and I expect to see Whanau back in Wellington etc. More pro-co governance down the line elsewhere too. The Stuff poll reflects the onput of its audience which is primarily LGTPM . I am 69. If I was in my 40s with work skills I would emigrate, probably back to Asia where I used to work . UK is arguably worse than here although as a UK and NZ citizen born here it might have been an option long ago but it has so many more taxes , gains, inheritance etc that hit the middle segment hard.
If you do not vote, you abstain, and abstention is agreeing with the system. Voting for any “political party” is voting for the current system, by profound irony so is abstention [not voting]. They use abstention against you. The main stream media are part of the lie. They say voting for a smaller/fringe party is a “protest vote”. It is not. It is voting for the system the same as abstention. “Abstention from voting only empowers tyranny further, as proven by our current governance. The greater the abstention, the greater and more prolonged the tyranny.”
“Only cowards and fools abstain from voting” Abraham Lincoln.
It is Important to consider the following points to understand why spoiling a ballot by writing “I DO NOT CONSENT” is in fact the only REAL PROTEST VOTE: Which means, your spoilt ballot counts.
