A fascinating post by Stephen McBride. He notes:
A single uranium pellet the size of a gummy bear contains as much energy as 140 barrels of oil. It’s the cleanest, safest energy source known to man.
HALEU, the best fuel for next-gen reactors, is often packaged in ceramic armor called TRISO, which keeps the fuel dense and safe.
TRISO comes in indestructible snooker ball-sized pebbles. Each one stores enough power to run thousands of homes.
TRISO doesn’t melt. It doesn’t leak. It traps radioactivity inside, even in extreme accidents. That’s why the DoE calls it the most robust nuclear fuel on Earth. Even the NRC recognizes it as ‘functional containment.’
Here’s one entrepreneur on the magic of TRISO: “You know those giant concrete containment domes that surround old reactors in case something goes wrong? With TRISO, we’ve basically engineered the dome into every single fuel particle.”
TRISO gives microreactors clean, compact, constant power, with no meltdown risk, and no need for massive containment buildings.
Human innovation is incredible.

Imagine a skyline not covered in those horrible (not environmentally friendly) wind turbines - or farmers fields growing food instead of being covered in un environmentally friendly solar panels.....but no we can't entertain the idea of nuclear anything cos we're kiwis....never mind that the rest of the world doesn't give a crap and china will be sending their nuclear subs our way whether we like it or not.....but no we can't entertain the idea of a US nuclear sub.....
Same material as pebble bed reactors - safe as possible - bring them on now !
If it weren't for emotive activism the world would be decades further down the track with nuclear - both fusion and fission. Carbon religion would never have been started by anti-capitalist, western liberal lemmings along with its economic sabotage/damage still being perpetuated. Instead, there would be plenty of cheap reliable baseload power, powering civilisation, innovation and productivity, and improving the standard of living everywhere - and reducing demand on fossil fuels.
But instead let's look forward to the day when you plug your car or house into your phone instead of the other way around.
Power to the people.
Look up X-Energy. com
50mw portable power stations, fits inside a shipping container.
Never needs refuelling.
Just imagine one shipping container produces more reliable power than a geothermal power plant. No emissions, plumes of steam or ugly pipes, trashing the countryside.
I used to love Taupo, I now think it’s a shithole due to all the Geothermal power plants making the place a mess.
But wait, you can’t have this nuclear nirvana it’s only for the rest of the world coz Chloe says so.
NZ World leading, my arse!

SMR reactors just won’t be a big thing due to economics.
