Spring is upon us but that doesn’t seem to be the case at Radio New Zealand, where the joys of spring are noticeably absent. There is no spring in their step but instead a palpable air of mortification among the people they like to call their kaimahi (staff). As a result of Richard Sutherland’s report on the organisation, according to the Herald’s Media Insider, the kaimahi are harbouring hurty feelings and are distressed.
I can tell these people that others are suffering from the same malaise: we the taxpayers who have to fork out for the undue wages these fragile little petals are paid. As I mentioned in my last article, these employees trot to work each day to contribute to what they believe to be a sunset industry. They believe live radio is dying. As far as the organisation they work for is concerned, they are correct.
They are unable to fix the problem because they ARE the problem. If they are happy to spout news and information daily that is anathema to the majority of the population, then eventually they will die. They are inviting ‘death by a thousand cuts’. They will wither on the vine like the left-wing media the world over is doing. Their intransigence to their predicament is their problem: it is self created.
But all is not lost for the kaimahi. There is a knight, red not white, mounting his steed, as we speak, to ride to their rescue. He’s their union representative and has the wood on their organisation. In fact he goes by the name of Wood. It’s the very same gentleman from the Labour Party who resigned after inappropriately declaring his shares: none other than Mr Michael Wood. What better person could they want! Michael understands the reasons for their hurty feelings and their distress. He’s no doubt felt them himself.
Mr Wood thought the report had been handled “pretty poorly”. He said the way in which our staff (he seems to be under the misapprehension they’re his kaimahi) seem to be getting fingered and blamed in parts of the report was pretty on the nose. So Michael thinks a report should be produced that attaches absolutely no blame to HIS staff. Like everyone at Radio New Zealand, Michael is not living in the real world.
In the real world of business there is no room for hurty feelings or distress. If you’re not performing, you are shown the door. No knight is coming to your rescue. You rise or fall on your ability to perform. This is 2025 and the organisation should reflect that in the way it presents itself.
Nothing will change unless the organisation changes. In order to effect change, as the report suggests, staff need to change. It requires little imagination to see Mr Wood’s reaction to that move. That’s akin to hammering nails into the coffin. More hurty feelings and more distress for his precious little kaimahi. We can’t have that, can we?
This outfit is not viable in its current form. To have a future there has to be decisions made that would be unpalatable for it and the staff working within its confines. It is equally unpalatable for the taxpayers to continue to prop up this monolith that refuses to take the steps required to reform itself and attract listeners.
Short of doing that it will be, in the words of Private Frazer from Dad’s Army, “doomed I tell you, doomed”. In all likelihood they are.

The ultimate responsibility needs to rest with Luxon who has been pussyfootting around this issue in his usual spineless manner.
The answer is simple. Keep the Concert Program, as long as it sticks to music. It is one of the few genuinely educational broadcasters left. Then sack the entire staff of the National Program as that is anything but educational.
"Spring is upon us?"
Not for another 3 and a half weeks.
If you're not on the same page as me, look up 'vernal equinox'.
The Heavens decide when spring begins, not bureaucrats.
Doomed indeed, so end it soon and save us all the drama of having to read or hear about how traumatised they all are.
RNZ is shit, if it was a commercial outfit it would have been closed long ago
