I just wish, when it comes to the Middle East conflict, politicians around the world would dispense with their holier-than-thou attitudes and start dealing in realities. On a broader level they are arguing against themselves: they spend half their time arguing for a ceasefire and the other half arguing for a Palestinian state. If you achieve the first then you can’t possibly achieve the second.
In terms of politicians believing they could have their cake and eat it too, a similar situation occurred when the UK took its first steps to join what was then the Common Market, now the EU. Politicians believed they could join the Common Market while keeping the Commonwealth intact. In the words of Field Marshal Montgomery, a clear headed and direct communicator, “It cannot be done.” History shows he was right. The Commonwealth countries were discarded and left to their own devices.
Now we have politicians believing you can have a ceasefire and then create a Palestinian state. If a ceasefire were put in place tomorrow, Hamas and the other terrorist groups would be where they are now – down, certainly, but not out. They would welcome a ceasefire as a means to rearm and regroup.
Trying to establish a Palestinian state in that situation is an exercise in futility. Netanyahu sees that. Trump sees that. They both know that for Palestinians to co-exist peacefully with Israel, the likes of Hamas must be, if not completely wiped out, rendered so ineffective that they are incapable of making trouble. Politicians recognise this too but they seem blissfully unaware that cannot happen by instituting a ceasefire.
Unless Israel is allowed to complete the mission it has started – which is to destroy the terrorists – then they will get nowhere. Hamas and their ilk will just keep going.
Anyone who thinks Hamas cares one jot about the Gaza Strip is completely naïve. They don’t care about that any more than they care about the Palestinian people they are supposed to represent. There is ample photographic evidence of what Hamas is up to with the food aid, but of course you won’t see it on the legacy media ‘news’.
You also won’t hear from the media about the amount of food America is delivering by circumventing Hamas and the United Nations. They have already delivered two million tonnes of food according to America’s Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee. The security required to get the food in and ensure people are fed is provided by Israeli forces. America has provided over two billion meals through an organisation called Feeding America. America Food Kitchens, the umbrella organisation to Feeding America, is serving 133,000 meals daily.
Under President Trump, America remains the world’s largest provider of humanitarian aid. Another organisation, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli nonprofit organisation backed by both the American and Israeli governments, is also distributing food in Gaza. And where are the Hamas-supporting left-wing media on these stories? Not a dicky bird...Any praise or support from other world leaders? None.
What you get instead is a picture of what, on the face of it, looks like a severely malnourished child who, according to the media, was in that state because Israel prevented it from being fed. This piece of scurrilous news emanated from one of those leftist bastions of false information, the New York Times. (They are also in the gun big time for their involvement in the fraudulent Russiagate fiasco.) The story was a complete lie and the NYT had been forced to apologise.
The GHF, for their troubles, have earned the wrath of the United Nations. According to them, the GHF should be dismantled because it is an example of how humanitarian relief can be exploited for covert military and geopolitical agendas in serious breach of international law. So, they are more interested in the political technicalities and international law than they are in ensuring the people of Gaza are fed. They would rather play politics and let the people starve.
A ceasefire will do no more than allow the terrorists to carry on the same way until we reach the next October 7. And it will happen. Look at Iran. The bombing of their nuclear sites was a necessary and well-executed operation but don’t for a moment think this has derailed the Mullahs from their long-term goals. In due course, it will be necessary to carry out similar raids.
The same will happen with the Israel situation and this is what Trump and Netanyahu recognise and want to avoid. It is worth remembering they didn’t start the current crisis. This is now a war and it can only end with the near wipeout of the terrorists. The popular misnomer is genocide (the Jewish people know more about that than anyone else), but this is the only way to sort the issue out so that it doesn’t happen again. Otherwise, forget about the idea of a Palestinian state.
The Gaza Strip needs a complete rebuild. America (and maybe others) is willing to step up and help in this. Again, it cannot happen while Hamas has any sort of a presence there. The Palestinian people deserve to live in a free, peaceful and prosperous nation. This is the long-term objective held by Netanyahu and Trump. I think it is a secretly held view of leaders of some other Arab countries. It would not be a surprise to see them also step up when the occasion presents itself.
The debate in parliament this week over Palestine became a farce as politicians took sides and were not dealing in reality. Speeches became rants that resulted in a couple being asked to leave the House, the hapless and none-too-bright Chloë Swarbrick being one.
On Wednesday our prime minister had another go at Netanyahu over recent bombings in Gaza, saying he has “lost the plot”. He says the Israeli prime minister is not listening to the international community. That is because they have got it wrong. Luxon says any attempt by Israel to control Gaza would be wrong. But Netanyahu doesn’t want to control Gaza: he wants to create a situation whereby a solution can be found so Israelis and Palestinians can live peacefully beside each other.
With all due respect Mr Luxon, it is you who have completely lost the plot. Your comments in this regard are typical of the woke attitude that is infesting the leadership of your party. On this topic, along with issues relating to race, you are out of step with your supporters. You are not inspiring confidence; you are causing angst and a degree of fear among those who would consider voting for you and your party. The fear is that your actions could lose the coalition the next election.
I want a solution where the Palestinians are governed by a leadership not hell bent on destroying Israel and one that puts them and their wellbeing first. To think a ceasefire is the answer is simply naïve. The United Nations has a lot to answer for in perpetuating this nonsense. Until world leaders start dealing with reality, nothing will change.
The key to it is to, as far as possible, obliterate Hamas. The war must continue until Israel finishes the job. Only then will a brighter future be possible for the Palestinian people. The Palestinians must be shown their prosperity can only be achieved by agreeing to live in peace with Israel and they must be willing to be governed by a democratic system that has this goal as its primary objective. Recent polls point to the majority of the Palestinian population wanting this. Who knows if it will ever come to pass. We live in hope.
