Whanganui District Council’s Relationship Agreement With Iwi Still To Be Ratified
Whanganui District Council remains committed to forming an official partnership with iwi, after “a long and, at times, arduous journey” towards Treaty settlement.
Councillors last year voted to adopt a relationship agreement with iwi and hapū, coming into effect after the Whanganui Land Settlement Negotiation Trust’s (WLSNT) Treaty settlement with the Crown.
The agreement - Te Tomokanga ki Te Matapihi - includes a jointly managed reserves board, Ngā Tūtei a Maru, and charitable trust, Toitū te Whānau.
Nearly 130ha of council-owned grazing land will be transferred to Ngā Hapū o Te Iwi o Whanganui, a move initiated by then-mayor Michael Laws in 2009.
If the agreement is ratified by iwi and hapū, the council will begin a relationship with Takapau Whāriki Trust (TWT), which replaces the Whanganui Land Settlement Negotiations Trust (WLSN)......

ACT pledges to ban compulsory karakia from resource consents if elected
ACT has pledged to ban resource consent conditions requiring people to take part in or pay for religious or spiritual ceremonies, such as karakia, if elected.
On Saturday, ACT’s Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change spokesperson Simon Court announced the party would introduce a rule banning compulsory spiritual observances, such as karakia, meaning people could not be required to fund, take part in, arrange or perform blessings or other religious observances. However, they would remain voluntary for those who wanted them.
Another rule would also exclude purely religious or spiritual beliefs from being treated, on their own, as an adverse effect.....
