So, why do we still see government job vacancies like this?

Health NZ released the report soon after Minister Simeon Brown declared the “recklessly mismanaged” system under the previous government “changes today.”

An independent report by Deloitte, published on Health NZ’s website, found the significant reliance on the use of a single Excel file was a “major issue” for the agency responsible for managing billions of taxpayer dollars.

A project to replace a system that dishes out $12 billion of health payments every year is in trouble.

Health NZ / Te Whatu Ora’s health sector agreements and payments system was rated three years ago in danger of complete failure. But three years on it has spent $85m only for the replacement project to appear to be “unachievable”, a newly released Treasury paper prepared in March shows.

Doctors at Hutt Hospital are being asked to make beds and clean medical equipment, on top of a busy patient workload.

A.E. Thompson: Saving Money and Sense at Health New Zealand

Health NZ's governing board was replaced with a commissioner to rein in budget overruns. One might wonder where savings can be made. Unfortunately, some of the savings will be at the expense of 'front line' health services if critics are correct in alleging that the percentage increased funding for health fell well short the percentage increase in population due to immigration and the increased proportion of aging baby boomers placing greater demands on health services.

However, publications from Health NZ point to considerable race-based ideological investment of dubious benefit. For example, a communication last week stated:

Professor Jerry Coyne: Repost with evidence - Health New Zealand “encourages” its employees to say Māori prayers daily

NOTE: I put this post up the other day, but then got a very irate email from a Kiwi saying that no, I was WRONG: Health New Zealand, he asserted, never sent around any notice to employees encouraging them to say spiritual prayers (karakia) during the day: a Māori custom. I objected to this as a mixing of religion and government (governmental health efforts), as well as a partial sacralization of indigenous practices. Because of the correspondent’s objection, and because I had no original evidence for such a notice being sent out—just a reader’s assertion—I pulled the post. I also informed a NZ outlet, which had asked to republish my post, to hold off until they could get evidence that such a notice about karakia was indeed circulated.

The organization in NZ has now procured such evidence, so I’m reposting what I took down, but have added the notice (with a link) verifying the government’s urging employees to pray. And to the person who told me in very strong terms that no such notice existed, well, this is a family site and I won’t tell him what to do—but you can guess.

A.E. Thompson: Health NZ and the PSA sneak in a bit more racism while they can

Days after the new government was sworn in, the PSA has announced the latest employment agreement (yet to be ratified by members) for the 'Allied' health staff with Health New Zealand, i.e. non-medical health professionals such as social workers, radiologists and so forth. One item in the agreement states:

"Allied leading the way with an exciting new Tikanga clause, the first of any health collective agreement! Māori Pūtea/Allowance - A Pūtea will be paid where, by mutual agreement, the kaimahi Māori will deliver Pūkenga Māori on behalf of the service or organisation, where this knowledge is not recognised in their role or remuneration."

Lindsay Mitchell: Deadly excuses

Today Health NZ, Te Whatu Ora, released its latest report on childhood immunisation which includes longstanding vaccinations against the likes of diphtheria, polio, tetanus, whooping cough, chickenpox, measles, mumps and rubella.

Compared to other ethnicities, Maori children have had consistently lower immunisation rates which the report says, "...leave tamariki Māori disproportionately vulnerable and exposes Aotearoa to significant risk of vaccination-preventable disease outbreak through inadequate herd immunity."
