John Tookey: One year on from Cyclone Gabrielle, NZ still needs a plan to fix its failing infrastructure
Labels: Auckland floods, Climate change, Cyclone Gabrielle, Infrastructure, John Tookey, Managed retreat, ResiliencyCyclone Gabrielle caused chaos one year ago. Repairs due to that storm and the Auckland floods have required substantial time and resources. Hawkes Bay, parts of Auckland and the Coromandel all still bear the scars of the worst storm to hit New Zealand this century.
The good news is that most initial repairs are complete. The bad news is that the restored infrastructure is just as vulnerable as it was prior to Gabrielle. Restoring infrastructure to the way it was before a natural disaster is not necessarily the best approach for a resilient future.

John Tookey: NZ’s gas problem - phasing out natural gas in homes demands affordable alternatives first
Labels: Climate change, Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), John Tookey, Methane, Natural gas, NZ Climate Change Commission, renewable energyDo you have gas? It’s a personal question that may cause offence – and not always for the obvious reason. Because the way we choose to cook or heat our homes is increasingly becoming something of a sore point.
Since the Climate Change Commission issued draft advice recommending the banning of new gas installations by 2025, anyone with a gas hob or central heating has been put on notice.
With the government’s gas transition plan due for consultation this year, a long-term plan to phase out gas will require everyone affected to start thinking about the alternatives. But it may not be a simple transition. Moves to cancel the humble gas hob even ignited another culture war in the United Sates.
