Corey Smith: Can the Legacy Media Survive in the Age of Trump?
Labels: Cory Smith, Donald Trump, Legacy media, SubstackPresident Donald Trump rewrote the campaign playbook in various ways during his 2024 run for the presidency, but how he dominated alternative media and spent hours chatting on podcasts instead of appearing on primetime shows might be the most remarkable way he changed the game. Legacy outlets were an afterthought. He continues to leverage new media to his advantage while traditional sources struggle to figure out how to compete with influencers and podcasts, how not only to survive but to thrive. For them to remain contenders, though, is proving to be more complicated than just playing follow the leader.

David Farrar: The Marsden Fund changes will boost university rankings
Labels: David Farrar, Judith Collins KC, Legacy media, Marsden Fund, The TreatyThe Herald has another story with the usual suspects complaining that Judith Collins cut off the woke research gravy train by requiring funding to go on actual scientific research rather than how to create a Treaty of Waitangi compliant tax system.
The legacy media have run probably ten times as many stories attacking the changes and labelling them controversial, as they did highlighting some of the projects that were previously funded that was nothing more than woke activism seeking funds.

Dieuwe de Boer: Are the Rich Turning Right?
Labels: Dieuwe de Boer, Independent media, Legacy mediaElon Musk is openly calling for regime change in the United Kingdom. His platform X is shaping narratives of the damage that both illegal and legal immigration are having on the West. The inclusion of mass legal migration as a problem is a welcome one for New Zealand.
Mark Zuckerberg is firing 40,000 "fact checkers" as he wears a million dollar watch and solid gold chain. Looking and acting poor has become uncool for the tech billionaires. He started lifting weights, doing martial arts, and stopped eating seed oils. The testosterone boost drastically altered his politics.

DTNZ: US election shows why legacy media will be obsolete within five years
Labels: DTNZ, Legacy mediaAlmost a week after the fact, the leftist meltdowns and MSM pundit soul-searching over Donald Trump’s historic landslide election victory continue unabated.
In the wake of the devastating defeat of their favoured Democratic Party, the global legacy mainstream media network is already laying the groundwork for their false narratives over the coming four years of Trump’s second presidency – chaos, mayhem, racism and misogyny.

David Thunder: Jeff Bezos Is Right - Legacy Media Must Self-Reflect
Labels: David Thunder, Jeff Bezos, Legacy media, Public’s trust in the mediaI can count on one hand the times I have seen leaders of media organisations engage in anything that could be described as hard-hitting forms of self-critique in the public square.
One of those times was when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg went on public record, in a letter to the Republican House Judiciary Committee (dated August 26th, 2024), that he “regretted” bowing to pressure from the Biden administration to censor “certain Covid-19 content.” Another was the almost unprecedented public apology in January 2022 (here’s a report in English) by a Danish newspaper that it had towed the “official” line during the pandemic far too uncritically.

Fiona Mackenzie: Legacy Media Commentators Display Their Ignorance
Labels: Democracy, Fiona Mackenzie, Legacy media, Maori wards, TribalismSome commentators in the legacy media seem desperate to be seen as fair and supportive of identity separatists. They are vigorously protesting against the Government’s attempts to restore New Zealand’s democracy.
Recent rants have targeted legislation that may require Councils to hold referenda on identity-based electoral wards (i.e., those identifying as Māori versus all other New Zealanders).

Rodney Hide: Endless repetition makes lies truth
Labels: Female spaces, Gender-neutral bathroom, Legacy media, Remarkables Ski Field, Rodney HideThe Ardern years continue to blight the nation. It’s not just the destructive policies and debilitating debt but the lasting dysfunctional governance both public and private that routinely lies to us and infantilises us.
The legacy media are gone. They are now pimps for government and corporate propaganda.
Endless repetition makes lies truth, with dissent deplatformed and demonised.
