Wayne Ryburn: Reframing New Zealand’s History

New Zealand's mainstream media continues to propagate the one-sided history espoused by the Waitangi Tribunal, activist Maori academics and their pakeha acolytes, as our official history. History is complex and comes with many perspectives. Several articles published in the NZ Herald during 2024 and more recently, by authors Simon Wilson, Julia Gabel, and Audrey Young, clearly indicate their support for viewpoints propagated by the Waitangi Tribunal and contemporary iwi.

Wayne Ryburn: Letter to Minister Chris Penk

The Minister for Building and Construction, Land information

The Hon. Chris Penk

Dear Chris,

In the West Auckland area of Taupaki-Kumeu, horticulturists including myself, have to comply with water-bore renewal fees which will cost property owning horticulturists $7000 along with a now separate hydrologist's report of $5000 or more, in addition there may also be a water meter verification fee requirement of over $800, the last two having GST added. Our bore consents, which last for 15 years, are due at the end of May this year. In 2012 the consenting renewal cost was only $2500 including gst.

Wayne Ryburn: Matariki

Who doesn't like a holiday; having a day off from work to celebrate the new year ? But which is the correct day to celebrate it and is Matariki, referred to as the Maori new year, the one that should be celebrated or Puanga?

Star gazing has occurred since the time of the hunter gatherers who made observations tracking celestial events that marked intervals of human time. The waxing and waning of the moon marked out months of the year while the rising of a star often marked the duration of the year.

Wayne Ryburn: The Rising Anarchy in New Zealand's Democracy. The Saga of TV1 News at Six and the BSA.

Part One; The BSA and historical misconceptions. The rise of “Insider History” resulting in a lack of accuracy and balance in New Zealand's History.

It came as no surprise that complaints concerning TV1 News at 6’s news story, regarding the ‘gifting of land’ for Auckland, were dismissed. The composition of the members of the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) would have led to this. Its members were appointed, over the past six years, by the former Labour Minister for Broadcasting, Willy Jackson. The following were appointed: Susie Stacey (2018); Pulotu Tupu (2021); Aroha Beck (2022) and John Gillespie, former head of news and current affairs TVNZ (2021). Jackson, a keen advocate for Labour’s ‘Hepuapua’ co-governance policies, has widely proclaimed that democracy has to evolve to place Māori at the centre of decision-making. Therefore, it is unlikely he would select anyone opposed to these policies to the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

Wayne Ryburn: The “Myth” of Gifting Land for the Founding of Auckland

The following complaint was sent to TV1News at 6 on 26th Sept 2023 due to a news item that portrayed the so-called “gifting” of land for the establishment of Auckland in1840. No reference to the land purchasing process was mentioned in the news item.

Many media stories for several years now have been largely devoid of critical research due to ill-informed lazy journalism. Recently on the 19th September 2023, printed media, television and radio all blithely allowed local Ngati Whatua o Oraikei to repeatedly claim that what is now downtown Auckland was gifted to the the new colonial government in 1840. Myth making now abounds with much of our history, primarily derived from the Waitangi Tribunal's deliberations, all from only a Maori perspective while other view-points are ignored or dismissed.

Wayne Ryburn: “When Truth becomes Distorted and made to Disappear”

Following my series of articles on the year 10 social studies learning workbook on “The Treaty of Waitangi -Te Tiriti o Waitangi” – see HERE - it should be obvious to readers that all New Zealand students deserve a more accurate and balanced account of our history.  I have had  many requests for obtaining this textbook. Initially you can ask your secondary school children, or grandchildren for it, if they have used this text. It has a quite distinctive green colour. Failing that look up ESA Publications. You can call them on 0800372266 or email them; info@esa.co.nz.

The myth making or simply poorly researched history still continues to be published.

Wayne Ryburn: Crisis In New Zealand’s Democracy

For over a decade there has been a growing crisis within democracy at all levels of government.  Impositions keep coming from Wellington undermining the rights of  all citizens to participate in the nation’s political processes.

Aucklanders in 2009 were denied the right to decide on whether to become a “Super City.” The imposed amalgamation of several local bodies  occurred without a referendum, unlike for the Wellington region. The Council Controlled Organisations - entities established to carry out public functions - have little or no scrutiny. Typical is Auckland Transport continuing with its predetermined policies rendering consultation farcical.
