Frank Newman: The lost Post

The Dominion Post is dropping “Dominion” from its name.

Today Stuff published quite a lengthy article that appeared to be a slightly confusing mix of nostalgia and justification, although for the latter one must read between the lines. Here >>>

Presumably, “Dominion” is a representation of colonialism that the folk at Stuff do not want to be associated with. So it will soon be simply known as the Post.

But which post? Fence post as a tribute to farmers? Post as in postage and our increasingly anorexic postal service. Or perhaps last post, as in remembering our fallen soldiers. Or maybe post as in postscript and a prophecy about legacy media.

Then there’s the other question. The article reminds us that, in May last year, “kaumātua and rōpu from Te Ati Awa Taranaki Whānui blessed Stuff and The Dominion Post’s new offices with karakia and waiata, and gifted the name Ngā Pānui….The name references puna o te kī – a spring of profound words, puna mātauranga – a pool of knowledge and puna kōrero – a pool of speakers.”

The question is, is the gifted name “Ngā Pānui puna kōrero” good to go for the new masthead or will they need another gift? One presumes Stuff staff will continue to work from the same building and continue to drink from the same watercooler of profound words albeit, with an ever-diminishing pool of speakers.

Personally, I would have thought there would be some more pressing issues for the Stuff stable to consider and more practical ways to arrest the decline in readership and advertising revenue. I am no expert and can only comment as a mere consumer, but balanced journalism may be worth a try – providing a balanced narrative instead of a politicised one.

Or publishing what their remaining readers want to read may be worth considering.

Balanced journalism and publishing what people want to read would be quite a radical departure from the way the business is currently run, but heck, if something is not working why not try something different? What have they got to lose that they are not going to lose by not changing?

The presence of the PIJFund and possibility of more in the future eliminates objective balanced reporting generally, not just for candidate articles. A few years ago, before anti vaccers and climate deniers messed things up, papers followed a policy of balance. Some Letters to Editor were unexpectedly published probably because the only one received from a counter camp. Very different today. If not compliant with current govt policy straight into the bin.
As one who can remember the incessant weird and completely unfathomable baying calls of the down town paper boys in the 1950s, I wonder what they would make of "nga ponui puna korero!"

Maori also have a lot of traditional knowledge about newspapers.

" One presumes Stuff staff will continue to work from the same building and continue to drink from the same watercooler." Or continue to suck from the same trough of taxpayers' money.

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts! It seems that Maori are gifting so many names these days. e.g. Auckland City Rail Link Station names.
