The Herald reported:
Te Pāti Māori has for some time believed eligibility should be race-based. It explained in statement:
“Te Pāti Māori is clear – our people should be able to access superannuation seven to 10 years earlier than the rest of the population.
“Māori life expectancy is significantly lower, and many of our people work in physically demanding jobs that take a toll well before retirement age.
“It is unacceptable that Māori contribute to the system their whole lives but die before they can benefit from it in the same way as others.
Maori don’t die earlier because they are Maori, and that there is something in their genetic code than makes them die early.
They die earlier because of health and socio-economic factors. The focus should be on reducing the prevalence of those factors.
As there is no significant genetic link to dying early, giving NZ Super to anyone who has a fraction of Maori DNA would be a very bad policy. Why should David Seymour get NZ Super at 60 because of his ancestry?

It is a completely wrong idea, as you have clearly pointed out in your article, David.
It is just one more example of divisive, racist, poor me, playing the victim that we are having pushed upon us.
Apartheid under way.
A truly progressive move would be to end all official recognition of ethnicity in all legislation.
With ethnicity no longer having official status, there could be no more race-based seats or race-specific party in Parliament, no more race-based wards in local government, no more census questions about ethnicity, no more co-governance, and no more basis for claims of unending victimhood.
No society can survive in harmony let alone prosper while activists promote division and entitlement on the basis of race, and the only way to bring this to an end is by ceasing official recognition of and status for ethnicity.

This is a complete load of rubbish. As a designer, over the years I worked with a myriad of tradesmen. All worked their whole life without hardly taking a day off for sickness. Most deserved early retirement( if anyone did) as they had genuine health issues. Superannuation should consist of a compulsory savings scheme and the retirement age should be the same for all people. I suggest the present age is satisfactory as it encompasses all likely health scenarios that I have observed. Once you start messing about with different groups it becomes too complicated. Start a new compulsory scheme now and don't subside those who don't work unless they have a disability.
Why not have a system like Germany where you can retire at 55,60 or 65. The pension is smaller the earlier you retire. It satisfies most people’s needs instead of an arbitrary number
It probably won't make much difference given the unemployment stats.
Is their goal a cradle to grave dependance upon the welfare state? If so, congratulations!
That objective has long ago been fulfilled.
Didn't cowboy suggest 'they' were genetically superior? Own goal lol
Maori will not need an early pension if Luxon does his usual appeasement tactic of bowing to all Maori demands such as their proposed 2% tax on all property sales.
The only plus to the suggestion of early pension for Maori, is that it keeps showing the voters what a looney tunes lot TPM really are. Every time they open their mouths, they just reinforce it
How about setting up a new ministry of lifespan estimation. Anyone can apply for an assessment on-demand and get a precise estimate on when they can start collecting super. If they die early, their family gets the remaining promised amount as a lump sum. If they exceed the target date, they get a visit from the armed officers squad. /s
Didnt Waititi claim maori were genetically superior? Now hes claiming they are genetically inferior?
Im so confused !
Janine - what if the disability is being maori? A known condition with symptoms being none to chronic megalomania and a whole lot of others.
