Eliora: Blockers Are Banned for Our Kids

Prescribing powerful pharmaceuticals to a child to move them towards gender-affirming elective castration or sterilisation is seriously questionable. Castration of animals, adults (eunuchs) and of some children has been happening for centuries. In practice, true elective castration of healthy minors for non-medical, non-transgender reasons has been effectively non-existent in western countries since World War II.

Puberty blockers, also known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues, are medications originally developed to treat cases of precocious (early) puberty. In recent years, the transgender activists have promulgated in schools and on social media the alarming idea that a child might be in the wrong body. This has resulted in a surge of influenced children and adolescents believing they have body dysphoria.

Doctors began to prescribe puberty blockers to minors. An extraordinary percentage of immature children and adolescents believe they are trans, according to Statistics NZ and the NZ Census.

The New Zealand Herald reported:

New Zealand is prescribing up to seven times more puberty blockers to young transgender patients than other similar countries, new analysis shows… Cumulative use of puberty blockers by 12- to 17-year-olds in New Zealand over this period was 1.7 times higher than the Netherlands, 3.9 times higher than Denmark, and between 3.5 and 6.9 times higher than England and Wales.

Last week, New Zealand First, the smallest party in New Zealand’s coalition government ‘won the hard-fought fight’ to get puberty blockers banned for any new cases of children wanting to transition.

The announcement made by Casey Costello, NZF MP, was warmly received. Costello says they “stared down the mob”, “listened to New Zealanders” and now “commonsense has a voice in government”.

We are going to do away with this ‘reckless gender ideology’. Puberty blockers are blocked.

New Zealand First uncovered an alarming disinterest in the health of Kiwi kids and young people. It is shameful that the Ministry of Health didn’t listen to concerned parents or others alerting them to read the Cass Review! It defies belief that Matt Doocey, National MP for mental health said he can’t wait for his young children to decide what gender they want to be.

The comprehensive UK study, the CASS Review: Independent Review of Gender Identity Services for Children and Young People, was led by Dr Hilary Cass, a retired pediatrician and former president of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health.

The review took place over four years and was held particularly at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust.

The final report was published 10 April 2024 and, alongside 32 recommendations, recommended puberty blockers be limited to research trials and that hormone treatment be deferred until age 16-plus with rigorous assessment. NHS England accepted all the recommendations with a phased-out rollout from 2025–26.

But there seemed to be no hurry to protect NZ’s children’s health and the Cass Review and any other study giving warnings were buried.

• The NZ politicians said nothing.
• Two health ministers ignored the issue.
• The NZ doctors kept prescribing.

Meanwhile, the activists ramped up their publicity and vehemently threatened anyone questioning the transgender narrative. Some were even violent against peaceful supporters of Posie Parker, a UK women’s rights speaker who simply wanted to speak to women about this issue. The police were slow in protecting those who wanted to hear what Ms. Parker had to say. Ms Parker left the country calling “NZ the worst place for women she has ever visited”.

The activists demonised parents of gender-questioning children, filling them with fear and lies. ‘It’s better to have an alive transgender child, than one who is not trans but dead by suicide.’ This threat was and is an untruth. There is no research whatsoever to suggest that children who believe they are the opposite sex have a higher risk of suicide if they are not medically transitioned.

Legislation and activists have bullied doctors into silence, captured ministries, schools, universities and politicians and built an industry that profits from confusion and irreversible sterilisation of children and young people.

Penny Marie, a guest speaker at the last NZ First Conference, was rewarded for her thorough research and work in this fraught field with a standing ovation, as she powerfully lobbied for change.
