Dr Will Jones: Britain Signs Deal to Deploy Troops to Ukraine

Britain has signed a deal to deploy boots on the ground in Ukraine as part of a proposed ceasefire deal backed for the first time by the United States. The Telegraph has more.

Sir Keir Starmer signed a joint declaration with France and Ukraine on Tuesday to confirm details of the so-called “Multinational Force” set to help uphold any peace agreement.

The declaration paves a legal pathway for British and French forces to operate on Ukrainian soil to help rebuild the war-torn nation’s armed forces and police its skies and seas.

At a meeting of the ‘coalition of the willing’ in Paris, the US agreed for the first time to “to support the force in case of attack”, according to a statement agreed by around 40 leaders of European governments and Canada.

Washington also promised to lead a high-tech operation to monitor any ceasefire line agreed between Ukraine and Russia to attribute blame for any violations.

Donald Trump’s commitment to provide an American backstop for those troops has been described by European sources as a game-changer. Moscow has refused to accept any Nato presence in Ukraine. …

However, as yet “no backstop for the security force has actually been agreed”, according to the Telegraph‘s Roland Oliphant.

Starmer, Macron, and Zelensky referred only to American involvement in ceasefire monitoring. They are still working on the backstop question.

Asked to elaborate, Mr Witkoff insisted: “This security protocols are meant to deter any further attacks on Ukraine, and if there are any attacks, they are meant to defend,” but avoided specifics – although he said the US military has been “thinking about” it.

That means the ultimate security guarantee – the implication that going to war with Ukraine again would mean going to war with the United States – is still not in place.

So Starmer is willing to offer money and resources to protect the Ukrainian border. Yet is not willing to protect his own countries border.

This coupelled with the apparent willingness of Denmark, Greenland and Venezuela to discuss possible future security arrangements with the United States is a real indication of where things are at.
Far from the wild claims that Trump is leading the world into another Iraq type disastrous regime change.
My guess is that the American troops will stay home, keeping their powder dry while the Nato forces do the heavy lifting.

Not sure where you’re coming from here, Clive. ‘The NATO forces do the heavy lifting’? For what? What’s NATO got to do with Venezuela? And what about Denmark and Greenland. Heavy lifting, then, of what? Denmark, carrying Greenland with it, is a NATO member, as is the U S. What happens when the forces of one treaty member confront those of another? Where Trump is leading the world is any one’s guess, but I can’t see that we can be anything but very worried.
