Davina Smolders states her case, in this short video, before the Far North District councillors voted to remove her from the council’s Te Kūaka committee, following her public criticism of its structure, unelected iwi and hapū representatives and Te Tiriti partnerships.
Davina Smolders is a proud Far North local, business owner, and former CEO and now serving as an Councillor on the Far North District Council, Davina is focused on building a council that’s fair, balanced, and transparent.

Councils removing elected officials from committees. Another step closer to the end of democracy in NZ.
She sounds to be an asset.... to ratepayers.
Far North DC needs a commissioner because democracy has been abandoned and racism prevails .
They are not alone in Northland , their issues may be different however many NZ councils similarly need independent commissioners , if only to monitor wasteful spending , beside racism.
Basil is quite correct, the issues are endemic to several Councils. We need more, not fewer elected representatives of the calibre of Davina who do actually represent us (elected not appointed being the operative word). If that means commissioners, so be it but I would far rather we return to in person voting as opposed to the postal fiascos and the games played in Northland during the last election to stack the decks.
And National's answer? That completely useless nincompoop in charge of Local Government - Minister ?
