Just a few months ago, the left-wing legacy media was decidedly Chicken Little on President Donald Trump’s tariff talk. Jobs would be lost, inflation would explode, the markets would tank, businesses would be crushed, and, yes, the sky would probably fall. Fast forward to the present, and some of those doomsaying news organizations are quietly – and even not so quietly – admitting that, at least for now, Trump is winning the trade war, and the US economy is feeling relatively few adverse effects.

Yet that is exactly what CNN and The New York Times did with a little help from a hastily put together Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) damage assessment that was conveniently leaked to the cable news network in record time. But that media narrative has already crumbled as if it had also been hit by one of those Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) devices recently delivered – business end first – to the Islamic Republic.

This meeting came on the heels of 59 Afrikaners arriving in the United States – white South Africans of primarily Dutch descent who chose to flee a regime that is openly hostile toward them.

Such is the state of modern American political partisanship that people who are, or were, in positions of power and influence say things that are both hilariously out of touch with reality and startlingly dangerous. Take America’s national security community, for example, which is a major component of the Deep State – or, if one prefers a less conspiratorial term, the administrative state. Fifty-one Intelligence Community (IC) officials and former officials already beclowned themselves attempting to deny the veracity of Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop. Now the bureaucrats are at it again, with 741 former high-ranking national security officials signing off on a statement endorsing Kamala Harris for president.

Once again, and rather tragically, we are reminded that some left-wing reporters and political pundits are willing to practically brush off an attempted murder because the target was a man whose political agenda they don’t like.

The enemies of free speech have relentlessly targeted Elon Musk since he acquired Twitter, rebranded it to X, and did away with the politically driven censorship that was once rife on the platform. The Australian government has been trying to meddle with what its citizens can and cannot post on the social media site, and, most recently, X was shut down in Brazil by an overzealous judge. Still, one would have thought that here in the United States – the last bastion of free speech on the planet – Musk would be on safe ground. That’s not the case, however, and one political operative even went as far as to call for the billionaire’s arrest.

Politicians and bureaucrats always seem to use the same excuses to justify censoring free speech and limiting fundamental rights: It’s for our own good. It must be done to protect us, to keep us safe, and to maintain national security. But what government – regardless of how democratic it may claim to be – hasn’t eventually become obsessed with increased security and control, ever more reluctant to allow free speech or other basic liberties?
