Owen Jennings: Now Here’s a Funny Thing.

Airlines have trees to offset their CO2 Greenhouse Gas emissions. That’s recognised and acceptable. More than that it is encouraged and subsidised.

Farmers have grasses to offset their CH4 (methane) Greenhouse Gas emissions. That’s not recognised and it’s not acceptable. More than that, they are heavily criticised and are threatened with severe penalties.

Humans emit CO2 Greenhouse Gas. We are not penalised because we are part of a closed, natural cycle where we eat greens that are grown by photosynthesis that uses CO2. That’s IPCC policy.

The climate mouthpiece of the UN, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change the IPCC, state that since the Industrial Revolution humans have been putting carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere and that has caused global warming, climate change, and all kinds of weather events.  

From 1900 to today, the amount of CO2 has increased from 209 parts per million (ppm), to about 420ppm. They claim that the rise in temperature of about 1.5 deg C since the Industrial Revolution some 170 years ago is wholly due to anthropogenic Carbon Dioxide.  In other words, Carbon Dioxide put into the atmosphere by humans.

A rare public debate has broken out on a climate science question that really matters – the warming effects of methane molecules in the atmosphere.

The argument was kicked off by Allison & Sheahen (2018) (‘AS18’) which discussed the major greenhouse  gases (water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) and their respective theoretical  contributions to planetary warming.

Do you have gas? It’s a personal question that may cause offence – and not always for the obvious reason. Because the way we choose to cook or heat our homes is increasingly becoming something of a sore point.

Since the Climate Change Commission issued draft advice recommending the banning of new gas installations by 2025, anyone with a gas hob or central heating has been put on notice.

With the government’s gas transition plan due for consultation this year, a long-term plan to phase out gas will require everyone affected to start thinking about the alternatives. But it may not be a simple transition. Moves to cancel the humble gas hob even ignited another culture war in the United Sates.
