Former Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett has been appointed the new chair of the national drug purchasing entity Pharmac, ending speculation of her plans to run for Auckland Mayor.
Associate Health Minister David Seymour said Bennett “will lead the Pharmac board in managing the pharmaceutical schedule and driving greater efficiencies and access to medicine for New Zealanders.
“Globally, changes in medicine are making them more useful and presenting new opportunities for our health, while at the same time presenting new challenges that need to be navigated,” Seymour said.
“I’m confident that Paula has the leadership qualities that will make her the best person to make the decisions needed to ensure that Pharmac is world-leading.

I can’t think of a worse person to chair Pharmac but at least it ends her bid to be the next Mayor of Auckland.
Paula Bennett is one of the nastiest people I’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting in politics. Her behaviour towards a stressed MP, despite pleas to back off, were met with a chilling hardness I’ve never seen before. Just days later that MP tried to take his life.
Cronyism is normally the sort of thing the left does really well, but this is just a shameless crony appointment from the Government.
I bet Bayleys is breathing a sigh of relief, though.

JL Ross.... Was a turncoat, a fake and could expect nothing from Bennett given his attempted stitch up of the Nats. You know that Cam.... JLR was an attention seeking hypocrite used by others... And it was the others who needed to support him not those he attempted to knife
But Cam, that is the way Luxon rolls doncha know ...?
He chucks his people under a bus instead of giving them support, as seen here he gives favour to cronies, he fails to bring a cabinet leaker to book which suggest that he clearly knew the source of the leak and that was an inconvenient truth - moreover, he is failing miserably to protect NZ against Maori elite excesses and demands. This is starting to reinforce my belief that while we have a coalition with some sensible arms, the body and the legs are taking us in the wrong direction. Are we simply the unwilling led by the unqualified?
Of course it's cronyism, as practised by the Labour riffraff over the past 6 years, and by countless Left or Centrist governments since Adam was in short pants.
Pander to the right sources, and you get a cushy job thrown at you - them's the rules. Try taking potshots at, for example, David Caygill, who has been feeding on the State nipple almost forever. It's what happens.
One can only hope Bennett will do something useful for Pharmac, weighed down as it is in a mire of red tape and seat-warming.
