Attaboy Michael. All his recent pronouncements have been excellent. Straightforward English understandable by ordinary folk like me, no obscure metaphors, no fashionable buzz words known to only to a hobbyhorse few, no gratuitous te reo. Michael muses on the large number of Council elected maori wards. The reason is simple; fear of cancellation. With pro maori attitude now so infiltrated throughout council management, life in council and outside would be made near impossible by being ostracised from all matters involving maori. It is to significantly separate this burden from councillors that public referenda are essential.
And further, according to Paniora, the role of a ward councillor is so reduced it seems to me they should not qualify for full payment. Regular councillors are expected to take a close interest in all topics affecting the total population, with a view to betterment of the lot of all. And most do. This involves extensive reading and deep consideration. According to Paniora any maori ward rep needs only scan topics searching for openings to extort payment/koha, maori employment, maori consultation (paid), and apply mana gaining leg pull convoluted maori names. All other business simply ignored.
