Lawyer Kirstin Murfitt has launched a new citizens-initiated referendum campaign urging New Zealanders to reconsider the country’s membership in the World Health Organization (WHO).
The movement, spearheaded by Who Knows NZ, argues that leaving the WHO would restore New Zealand’s sovereignty over healthcare decisions and allow policies tailored specifically to Kiwi needs.
In a recorded video posted to social media, Murfitt explains that the group is starting the initiative because “over time the WHO’s funding structure has changed, which means people with vested interests and conflicts of interest can help fund the WHO.”
Who Knows NZ further cite issues like a lack of transparency and prioritisation of political agendas over scientific evidence. “This isn’t about isolation,” the group states, “but about ensuring health decisions are made by New Zealanders for New Zealanders.”
Advocates believe redirecting the millions contributed annually to the WHO could strengthen the national healthcare system and fund independent initiatives. They also assert that New Zealand can maintain global collaborations without being bound by what they call the WHO’s “one-size-fits-all” approach.
Organisers need 400,000 signatures by November 2025 to bring the issue before Parliament.
Supporters can download signature forms, collect signatures, or donate to help spread the word.

Interesting. Two enquiries to the Minister of Health re. the final voting procedure at the May 2024 WHO meeting on this issue have not been answered. The voting did not follow usual UN procedure at such meetings. Only 37 countries (of 194) voted in the usual way.

Now where have we heard that before? Oh yes. BREXIT was going to free up 350 million pounds a week from its EU levies that could then be spent on the NHS. Sounded good at the time. Pity it never happened. But then, like most politicians, Nigel Farange never was very good at arithmetic (or honesty). Samuel Johnson observed that "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" which sums up Farange well. So who is this self appointed defender of our sovereignty, Kirstin Murfitt? Why has she concluded that WHO is a threat? All the evidence shows pathogens tend not to respect national borders and are equal opportunity killers when it comes to nationality. That's why international co-operation is vital in mounting effective and timely public health defenses. I afraid this so-called citizens initiative has all the hallmarks of the discredited anti-vax lobby who can't accept their cause was lost when New Zealanders inconveniently refused to die after being vaccinated against COVID. If so, Murfitt undoubtedly fits Johnson's observation. But whatever her motives, we have better things to do than take notice of this nonsense.
