Christopher Luxon’s leadership is failing to connect with voters, according to indy journalist Marc Spring, who says, “There is a deep dissatisfaction with our PM.”
Spring argues that Luxon’s weak approach has squandered National’s advantage, allowing Labour to stay in the fight when they should have been politically crushed.
“Luxon has allowed the left to stay in the game so to speak,” Spring writes, adding that his “Mr Nice Guy” approach has cost National votes.
The party had a strong post-election position, with swing voters ripe for the taking, but instead, ACT and New Zealand First have poached part of National’s base.
Spring says Luxon had “a perfect opportunity to hammer home the dire situation that Labour left this country in after six years of crazy spending and COVID brainwashing.”
Instead, Chris Hipkins has managed to “firm up those who may have turned their backs on Labour,” shifting economic blame onto National. Spring warns that National’s miscalculation could lead to disaster.
“There is still a real chance of total disaster for NZ if Labour pulled off an election win with the help of TPM and the Greens,” he writes.

Hipkins does have a point because although it was Labour who created the financial problems, National certainly hasn't fixed them, with Luxon trying to be everything for everybody. In fact, if it wasn't for ACT and NZ First he would be even worse again. One of the difficulties is that voters have unreasonable expectations, but Luxon has allowed that to happen.
Will Luxon look at Trump and realize that the right of centre strong man approach will win voters ?
Not that we need Trump or a Luxon, but someone with the guts to do what needs to done - and urgently.
Is he ever going to talk about the dismal Maori mess he is leading us deeper into ?
A person is not a "nice guy" if he does not consider us all equal. Chris Luxon is a wealthy man who has nothing to lose when New Zealand goes pear-shaped. There is simply no argument that justifies one race being given preferential treatment in any circumstances. All people need a helping hand if financially strapped through unforeseen circumstances. All people deserve equal healthcare based on need not race. The land, sea, air, water and mountains belong to us all. I suggest a visit to the international law court if any more land and sea is given away. It is not up to a small group of New Zealanders to give these away, depriving the rest of us.
Well said Janine, I agree 100%. I wish others did.
A lot of people do Basil, but seem unable to do anything about it unless through the ballot box. No matter who speaks out about it, the MSM and politicians are following their own agenda, and not telling us the truth. One turning point I feel will be the referendum on Maori local Councils. I predict there will be a major backlash against them, and then maybe the Govt will react. It is only a year after that referendum that the national elections will be held
