Matua Kahurangi: Te Pāti Māori has abandoned truth for toxic, dirty politics

Te Pāti Māori has officially tossed aside any remaining credibility in favour of deceit, division and deliberate misinformation.

In what can only be described as a malicious and spineless act, the party posted a completely fabricated quote on social media, attributing to Finance Minister Nicola Willis the words:

“Survivors should get zerodollars because it is not our problem.”

This quote is a lie. Nicola Willis never said it, never implied it, and never gave anyone a reason to believe she thought anything of the sort. This wasn’t a case of selective editing or taking words out of context. It was a total invention, pushed out publicly and without remorse.

And why? To incite outrage? To vilify a political opponent? To whip up their base using the same divisive, racially loaded tactics they’ve leaned on for years?

This is not advocacy. It is character assassination through disinformation. Te Pāti Māori has gone from political party to online agitator, using lies and racial hostility as weapons to bully, smear and distract.

Nicola Willis responded with justified anger. She reminded the public that the Government had just announced $774 million in redress for abuse in state care, including increased payments for survivors. Te Pāti Māori took this progress and twisted it into a vile attack built on fiction.

This is not the politics of progress. It is the politics of poison. Talk about dirty politics.

Te Pāti Māori have a well-established pattern of targeting those who do not fit their ideological mould, especially white women in positions of power. It is a cynical tactic, dressed up as social justice but executed with a disturbing zeal for division. They shout down their opponents as racist while engaging in it themselves.

The refusal to remove the false post or issue an apology speaks volumes. This is not a mistake. It is a deliberate strategy. One that relies not on facts or reason, but on rage and resentment.

It is also deeply damaging. Misinformation like this corrodes public trust, erodes the quality of political debate and distracts from the real issues affecting Māori communities. If Te Pāti Māori were serious about change, they would be focused on solutions. Instead, they have chosen to peddle lies and stir conflict.

Other political parties should not stay silent. If this is allowed to pass without condemnation, then disinformation will become just another tool in the political arsenal. That should alarm everyone, regardless of party allegiance.

Te Pāti Māori had the chance to be a genuine voice for Māori in Parliament. But they have chosen to be provocateurs, arsonists in our political conversation. They do not speak for all Māori, and they certainly do not speak for decency, honesty or accountability.

New Zealanders deserve better than this.

Matua Kahurangi is just a bloke sharing thoughts on New Zealand and the world beyond. No fluff, just honest takes. He blogs on https://matuakahurangi.com/ where this article was sourced.

Thank you for speaking out. It is vital that intelligent people in this country know that TPM does not speak for all of Maori ancestry.

TMP is not a Political Party. End of story. So abolish the TMP seats in Parliament as Bolger should have done, and every PM since.
Abolishing the TMP seats will remove the Activists from Parliament (except for some Greenies, who should be in a mental asylum), and at the same time save taxpayers a heap of money and help Nicola Willis balance budgets.
Oh, why do we not have a PM with courage instead of pandering to the Activists. National and Luxon have sold voters down the drain. National just cannot be trusted: Bolger, Shipley, Key, Luxon -- THE FOUR TRAITORS.

I do not understand why the coalition do not do something with the media in this country. There are "too many" issues that are too difficult to touch, this isnt what we voted for. Further, it should not be lawful for a political party to publish lies

Using the words truth and politics in the same sentence is an oxymoron and politics by its very nature is dirty.
Government is a compound formed from the Ancient Greek κυβερνάω kubernaō, (control) and the Latin -mente, ablative singular of mēns (“mind”).
The word "politics" comes from the Greek root "poli" (meaning "many") and "tics" (small, blood-sucking insects).

This is great. They are turning people against them in droves. Unfortunately it is probably turning most of the rest of the country against good decent maori people who deserve better than the party that proports to help them. Maori need to rally against these tpm racist losers.

The Parliamentary debate and vote on the Te Pati Maori suspension will be the turning point in the road for National at the 2026 election. Personally I call for the 21 days suspension to be Parliamentary sitting days. ie 3 days suspension per calendar week.

I am alarmed. I am alarmed they are allowed to exist as a political party at all when they carry on as they do. I am alarmed that anyone votes for them. I am alarmed that they have manged to get their tentacles into every aspect of our lives. I am alarmed by MSM support for them. I am alarmed that more Maori are not standing up and calling this out. Thank you for doing so.

Very funny, but unfortunately ticks are arachnids, and related to spiders; 8 legs good, 6 legs bad!

I know the ministers have plenty on their plate, but this is a libel.

Take them to court. There must be people on staff who can do most of the heavy lifting.

Doing nothing just encourages them. Look at the USA southern border

Spot on Robert.
Another pre 1840 Tangata Maori word that government has ALLOWED to be weaponized in legislation to deceive, lie, manipulate, misdirect and steal from the majority of New Zealanders.

Where were all the pearl clutchers? Please forgive my naivety but $774,000,000 seems like an awful lot of abuse by any measure. Has anyone seen the workings?
