Cultural markers along trail recount iwi’s history

Ten tohu whenua (cultural markers) have been installed along Te Aka Ōtākou, the walking and cycling path that follows Otago Harbour's edge from Portobello to Port Chalmers.

The markers tell stories about important landmarks and provide insight into the "rich and layered" Kāi Tahu history and world view - similar to the tohu whenua in George St.

They highlight significant landmarks, original Kāi Tahu place names, practices, values and stories.....

Whānau Ora review clears misuse claims, tighter oversight introduced
An independent review has cleared two former Whānau Ora commissioning agencies of allegations they misused government funds, but recommended stronger oversight to safeguard the programme.

Secretary for Māori Development Dave Samuels says, “Overall, the reports found that the allegations of inappropriate use of funds were not upheld. The reviews made a number of recommendations on how to strengthen our oversight, contract, and conflict of interest management as well as performance scrutiny. I have accepted these.”

The allegations centred on Te Pou Matakana spending Whānau Ora funds on Māori electoral roll advertising, and Pasifika Futures using funds to support the Moana Pasifika rugby team. The Te Pou Matakana campaign was reported in June 2025 and has since been referred to the Electoral Commission to clarify political neutrality....

Te Pāti Māori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi removed as party whip by leadership, addresses Tākuta Ferris’ post

The role is now listed on Parliament’s website as being held by Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer. Losing the job comes with a roughly $20,000 salary decrease.

Speaking to the Herald outside Parliament on Thursday night, Kapa-Kingi said she couldn’t speak about the decision but said “things are changing”.

She also addressed the controversial comments by MP Tākuta Ferris, saying her colleague’s wording “wasn’t as delicate as it could have been”.....

Time to end voting rights for unelected council appointees
ACT is campaigning to stop unelected appointees from holding voting rights on local council committees.

ACT Local – the Party’s local government ticket – released its Democracy policy in Wellington today, which includes a commitment to oppose voting rights for unelected appointees.

Meanwhile, ACT’s spokesperson for Local Government, Cameron Luxton, has written to the Minister for Local Government and drafted an amendment to the Local Government Act that would give effect to this stance at a national level.

“With rates climbing and households squeezed, the people deciding how to spend ratepayers’ money ought to be held accountable. But right now, we’ve got councils appointing unelected people to committees with full voting rights," says Mr Luxton.....

IRD latest to move on Māori initiatives
Inland Revenue is the latest Government Agency to take the axe to Māori initiatives with the PSA claiming that its kaupapa Māori research domain, Te Mana Rangahau, is it risk.

Te Mana Rangahau was a kaupapa Māori research and evaluation team within New Zealand’s Inland Revenue (IRD) department, dedicated to incorporating Māori perspectives and voices into IRD’s decision-making processes through research guided by Māori principles and tikanga. However, as of September 2025, Inland Revenue was planning to disestablish the team and shift its work to a more general Customer Interventions group.

The team followed kaupapa Māori research principles to gather insights from whānau, hapū, and iwi.

“It’s regressive, short-sighted, and a gutting blow to the Māori-Crown relationship. A clear signal that Inland Revenue is turning its back on meaningful engagement with whānau Māori,” Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi acting Kaihautū Māori, Marcia Puru, says.....

‘Over the moon’: Oriini Kaipara wins Auckland byelection for Te Pāti Māori against Labour’s Peeni Henare
Former broadcaster Oriini Kaipara has won the Auckland Māori seat of Tāmaki Makaurau for Te Pāti Māori after beating Labour’s Peeni Henare.

Kaipara becomes the sixth Te Pāti Māori MP, filling the seat of the late Takutai Tarsh Kemp who also beat Henare for the seat in the 2023 general election by a slim 42 votes. Henare had held the seat for several terms from 2014-2023.

Proof of more useful idiots than one could ever imagine.

The Crown has an obligation to protect Maori - it seems mainly from themselves. Another reason why the Maori seats need to be gone.

Anonymous said...

It really was a choice between one racist and another racist who wasn’t as smart. It’s past time to live up to the mmp promise of abolishing the Māori seats.
It’s a sad indictment of the voters in that electorate

anonymous said...

Another radical activist in Parliament... pushing the TPM agenda on the public purse. Beyond outrageous.

Anonymous said...

Why is NZ having this racist election for Parliamentary seat that shouldn't exist ?
As these seats become empty, abolish them.
Mr Luxon, show us you have the guts to do something positive for everyone, rather than just fumble about with the economy.

Robert Arthur said...

I envy the maori seat mps and maori ward councillors.Their task is so simple. They do not ponder and anguish over the greater good or any topics not closely affecting maori. They do not have to familiarise with all the legislation and past developments, just utter slogans which are too blatant and irrational to draw serious scrutiny, and vote as the artful external activists direct. No risk of being voted out for a significantly alternative party. So little effort invested little to lose but the mispllced adoration and the salary. It is certainly easy money.

Only 27.1% voter turn out for the by election and only about 6000 voters have put Kaipara in parliament. Tyranny of the minority?

We NEW ZEALANDERS, and our Country is doomed.

With a little thought, If one steps back and looks at the quality, ability, and integrity of those that the Māori and Green parties have in Parliament, and on their lists to be a candidate to enter Our House, it becomes obvious that the candidates and Parliamentarians from these parties are not worthy of being the cleaners of the House, neither mind keep a seat warm.

Even more concerning, is that we the tax payers are paying these low-lives their salary …….. to do what.

To be an activist.

They add no value to the democratic process.

An appalling state of affairs.

How can anyone with a brain vote for these clowns. Oh of course, voters know not for what they are voting.

And, clowns are supposed to be funny, and in circus.

Same may apply to some in National, Labour, ACT, and NZ First.

Luxon and mob, get a grip. Make change for the betterment of all NEW ZEALANDERS. Stop pandering to these low-lives.

Australian marae gains $1m from Australian government [announced by climate change minister]?

So, the NZ tangata whenua, [or First Nations representatives] and the Aus local indigenous mob elders or [First Nations representatives], have joined together to form a super First Nations representative corporation to grift the unsuspecting Australian out of house and home.
The marae has the backing of former ANZ chief executive Shayne Elliott and former Labour minister Annette King?

Robert Arthur said...

I presume the Aussies see the marae as a tourist, visitor, immigrant attraction. Not all maori gravitate to the Aussie gangs. Many of the most able, sufficently astute to realise how their brain washed mates are wrecking NZ, move there.

Robert Arthur said...

Without examples it is difficult to fathom what the maori research branch of IRD does /did. Employees must find it challenging to justify their day.I could understand a unit dedicated to eradicating all the effective evasive opportunity availble to maori by receiving effective income through costs met by the trusts untaxed as charities
The proposed Z research should lead to an understanding of drive offs..

Congratulations again to Oriini Kaipara! NZ politics needs fresh ideas, not the same doddering old fools and battleaxes. Kia kaha!

Kia ha ha ha ha....... Watch this bird in the House..... sad- no ideas at all

Michael Waldegrave said...

And aaaannnddd …….. the IRD could take a look at Open Star a Maori Fusion project, which would seem wiffy to me ?? Maori & Fusion just don’t seem right.

If Jesus Christ was on the ballot for Tāmaki Makaurau, things would have played out VERY differently!

Robert Arthur said...

11th. I am curious how these maori health authorities work. Manpower time per patient must be hugely increased. Do the maori charitable trust cover the added expense? Whoever finances, is patient selection on racial lines legal?

Anonymous said...

I am surprised Z service stations are still called that and not a long made up Maori name

Anonymous said...

I wonder how much this wokeism has impacted their bottom line!??

ihcpcoro said...

Isn't there a 'Z' in the Maori alphabet? ZZZzzzzzzzz

The Jones Boy said...

Presumably Z consider the renaming of their Napier service station to be a cunning marketing move aimed at boosting the sale of motor spirits to Maori. However I would be surprised if the average motoring member of Ngati Parau could care less what service station is called. Like me, and many other motorists, they probably fill up where the gas is the cheapest, whatever the name of the place. If they really cared about their mana, the hapu would have declared BP a symbol of colonial oppression and boycotted them years ago. So lets just assume this is not a case of Z embracing their local culture , but simply a cynical attempt by their Aussie shareholder to build market share in a sunset industry.

Ray S said...

An Iwi health authority, no doubt to deal with Maori health issues only. Only until the poo hits the fan with one of their patients, then into the public system. Who is paying for it? I wonder who, I've got a good idea who. Not Iwi for sure.
Exclusive rights to frequency spectrum, what BS is this. Maori had no idea what frequency was, let alone a spectrum.
Oh wait, they owned it all well before europeans arrived here.
Why is a Maori outfit even involved in these things, oh wait,
because we gave in to unfounded demands.
It's no wonder Maori keep pushing for more, we just roll over and say "there you go bro' , come back when you can think of something else'

Anonymous said...

Anon 7.31 here again. Given TPM and ''Maori'' generally are supposed to be opposed to oil drilling and fossil fuels perhaps Z could close its fuel stations in NZ in solidarity and convert them to something in line with (radical) ''Maori'' values and business strengths. Z really is playing the wokester here just changing names but continuing its business as usual.

Anonymous said...

Now the owners of Z petrol stations are proving to be as stupidly woke as the Mobil stations who label their full pumps with fabricated Maori names for petrol and diesel.
Duh .... !

As for the spectrum crap, blame Jacinda for that - an excellent example of how naive and ridiculous she could be, and her powers of persuasion over her Cabinet to give Maori for $50M for spectrum rights.

However, that pales in comparison given her continuing powers of indoctrination at USA universities.

Anonymous said...

Regarding "ACT is campaigning to stop unelected appointees from holding voting rights on local council committees" - This should be adopted as a Govt Bill immediately and put to the Parliament. If this does not happen we will know everything we need to know about National. It is an absolute no brainer. Of coursae someone will need to wake Minister Watts up first.

No misuse of whanau ora funds the review says. The news drops Friday afternoon. It’s a brown wash. Mind you, oversight rules have been tightened - i.e. next time the bus ticket we slap you with might be dry. Nothing to see here taxpayers and law abiding citizens. It’s business as usual.

Bilingual Maori class, is that for further indocrination of both maori and "non maori" or simply teaching students to speak maori and or english.?
Either way, another taxpayer payed for maori institution.
