Olivia Pierson: Memorandums and the Midterms

The Memorandum of Understanding with the Iranian regime displays an unwelcome shift that has sent shock waves throughout the world, raising serious questions among those who fully expect aggressive pressure on the brutal regime and unwavering support for Israel.

Trump’s pivot in rhetoric on the stage of the G7 has made heads explode, and I cannot help but wonder if Vice President Vance is the conduit of toxic whispers straight from the mouth of his buddy Tucker Carlson and into the President's ear.

The woke-right calumny of Candace Owens and Carlson (and many others) has sadly done its job well inside of MAGA, since there now exists a serious bloc of Republican voters who are overtly antisemitic by every measure. It’s been clear for a while that Vance was always going to become their person, while pretending to be otherwise. His pointed criticisms this week of Israel were downright disgusting - cheap pandering that wraps anti-Israel hostility in America First slogans. Such thinly veiled contempt is a betrayal of an important ally, done purely for domestic cheers from those who believe the propaganda.

When Trump quipped in his G7 presser: “If it works out, I’m going to take the credit. If it doesn’t work out, I’m blaming JD. You better be careful, JD. He’s going to turn his plane around and get the hell out of here,” actually says a lot. Vance is obviously the face of this MOU, and he did have to 'turn his plane around’ within two days since the IRGC declared they were not going to show up in Switzerland for the ceremonial signing and the beginning of the hard talks about negotiating the deal. During the presser, standing beside Trump was a very uneasy Secretary of State; Rubio appeared to be seething - and who could blame him?

Thankfully, Israel remains unbound by the deal - and the failure to send the MOU to them until Wednesday night may have been deliberate. They remain free to strike Hezbollah in Lebanon and the IRGC made sure this happened when they unleashed rockets into Israel’s Northern border killing 4 IDF soldiers in a tank. Israel retaliated - as it should.

This is the crux of the potential deal for the IRGC, they don’t give a shit about peace in their region, they’re craven Islamic radicals hell-bent on apocalyptic war; their leadership is consumed by betrayal, jealousy, corruption and chaos and its days are numbered. What they want is to completely restrain the Israeli Defense Forces from responding to their aggression, which would be decidedly suicidal for Israel.

Despite heavy strikes by both Israel and the United States that eliminated two tiers of top commanders and leadership, crippling their navy and air-force, the Iranian people did not rise up.

America has learned that it cannot deliver freedom on a platter to nations that are heavily factioned and suffering under the yoke of decades of violent oppression, no matter how much it might want to. Appallingly, Trump and Netanyahu had to attempt this alone while the rest of the Western world failed to involve itself, despite their own nations' heavy reliance on oil shipped through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has repeated that his worst fear is being a ‘President Hoover’ - whose legacy was largely responsible for kicking-off the Great Depression, yet Trump still did his best to take on this Herculean task unaided. Even the Gulf States didn't offer any help until they came under fire from Iranian ballistics. The whole world should have backed him.

But the greatest threat to the United States right now - the most immediate and pressing one - is the looming midterms. In November, if Republicans lose the House, the ever-rabid Democrats would block America First policies and launch endless show impeachment trials and court-cases against Trump. We've seen them do it before and its clear they want a rerun. It would mean handing the country over to vengeful Jacobins.

I believe that in Trump’s mind, before any foreign entanglement regardless of how important it happens to be, and Iran is, he's highly cognisant that if his party gets wiped out in the House, and they might, all the hard-won gains of the MAGA legacy will be smashed beyond redemption.
