Do you think these houses were ever going to be temporary?
Were these houses always going to be gifted to local Maori and do you think this was the agenda all along?
What about all the non Maori people in Hawkes Bay who lost their homes to cyclone Gabrielle, were they gifted homes at a “nominal” cost?
What Treaty obligations require the taxpayer to “donate” housing to a marae?
Apparently the land was originally secured under a short-term lease from the trust, and the homes were explicitly labelled “relocatable.” Thereby bypassing standard resource consents under emergency provisions allowed these to be built quickly, effectively serving as a shortcut to permanent development! So now they are permanent! Do you smell fish?
Surely this transfer of ownership raises serious questions about equality in our disaster relief funding and how government ministers seem to be using taxpayer funds to enhance their standing. I know this is a local marae but I would have expected Hawkes Bays National MP’s Katie Nimon and Catherine Wedd might have been involved in a display of government generosity!
By converting emergency housing into a permanent tribal asset, surely the government has established a questionable precedent?
Is the “nominal fee” wording for this transfer not just window dressing by the minister as a method of avoiding government liability, because it represents a massive transfer of taxpayer wealth to one specific ethnicity”
Potaka cited Treaty obligations as a reason for handing over the homes for a nominal fee. Does this not clearly indicate that the long-term plan was always to transfer these taxpayer assets into permanent tribal infrastructure?

So let’s say $500,000 per house for construction. So $5.5 million in government to some Māori tribes based on “partnership’ and “meeting ToW obligations” This is of top of the millions they gave these tribes to move their maraes. I think Mr, I can’t trust the guy as far as I can throw him, Potaka must belong to the Fabian Society.
Yes, this stinks to high heaven indeed. More theft from taxpayers gifted to the chosen ones. Pathetic.
The grifting is out of control.
Potaka/Luxon needs reigning in. Taxpayers have had enough.
With close to ground structure do not look as if untended to be relocated.
There is a new build (over a year ago) in wellesley rd, napier.
Seemingly 'no one wants to manage it' (sure there's a thing called #$^#@#%
I said to a mate last week-'it will be gifted to the cuzzies', he thinks no way.
Coincidently, on the other side of the railway line is to be developed by murries (It had had extensive infrastructure work done prior, when the site was to be a briscoes/rebel sports......until another claim was made by a murri, after the tribe had been paid off....go figure)
Potaka is murri party, happy to gift conservation estate to date.
National are as hey poo poo as liebor.
Why does race trump reason ?
Why are these people more deserving of my hard work through my paid taxes than anyone else with different DNA?
In Bunnings yesterday, I saw the most obese Maori pair selecting high end plumbing with unrestrained arrogance and entitlement, and I greatly expect from their conversation that I was paying for it indirectly.
Potaka, can you do anything without factoring race into it ?
I vote for National is a vote for apartheid.
My daughter was caught on the wrong side of various flooded bridges near Napier during cyclone Gabriel and couldn’t get back to her home for two nights.
She was turned away from two marae that she was directed to as a place of refuge. Whanau only she was told. Subsequent investigations revealed both marae obtained crown and council funding to be a place of emergency refuge for those of any ethnicity.
Just last year when booking a standard hospital checkup for her young infant at Hastings Hospital she was told there was a long waiting list. She was then asked was she Maori or Pacifica. What difference does that make she asked. Maori and Pacifica get preference she was told. This was just last year.
And National wonder why they are languishing in the polls. Have they not realised there is a chance they might be outnumbered by NZ First and ACT ,if such a coalition does win the next election
Pre European Maori did not build, over many centuries, a single piece of permanent infrastructure, not a single dwelling exists from that era.
It's no wonder that Maori lived to about 30 years living in a leaky cold, smoke filled, thatch shelter on a dirt floor.
Heard any Maori showing any gratitude for our improvements, or are we still vile colonists ?
Any letters to the Editors from these Maori now living in their European supplied thermally insulated houses in the freezing center of the North Island. ??
Ungrateful is too tame a word.
Doesn't their iwi have enough "settlement " money taken from people who were never responsible for their forebears unproven crimes, to build their people homes ?
If they haven't they could always have their tribal gangs "invest" in them with their obscene amounts of drug money ?
I'm sure Auntie does mind where it comes from - or maybe taxpayers dollars make it more comfortable ?
