Tice: AR7 support will not last

Writing in Energy Voice, Richard Tice tells renewables developers to “walk away” from AR7. In his first direct message to the sector, he warns the politics of net zero are shifting - and future subsidies can’t be guaranteed. He brands AR7 a threat to prices, security, and growth.

Tech giants to UK Ministers: relax Net Zero rules or miss out on AI

Tech giants have told ministers that Britain’s AI data-centre boom may require temporary on-site gas generation to overcome high energy costs and grid delays, highlighting tensions between the UK’s Net Zero goals and its ambition to be a global AI leader. Ministers say they aim to meet demand with clean power by 2030 but have not ruled out gas as a short-term fix.

Net Zero Samizdat: Green backlash gathers pace

UK

The Economist turns on Net Zero

The Economist reports that Britain’s net zero push is driving energy bills sky-high - 90% above the EU average for industry. It finds that renewables require costly grid upgrades and offshore wind has stopped getting cheaper. With public support wobbling, Britain is becoming a warning, not a model, for the risks of top-down climate policy.

Net Zero Samizdat: Miliband’s green energy gamble sparks cross-party backlash

UK

Miliband hikes subsidies for AR7

The UK has raised the maximum price it will guarantee wind developers to revive interest after last year’s failed auction. Labour’s 2030 targets are under fire, with critics warning higher subsidies risk pushing up household bills rather than cutting them.

UK abandons zonal pricing

Ed Miliband has dropped zonal pricing plans amid fears of investor backlash and higher bills for southern households. The Guardian reports that the Energy Secretary is under pressure from Number 10 to show when his reforms will lower bills. Net Zero Watch welcomed the news on zonal pricing, calling the proposal a “sticking plaster” that avoids fixing the core issue.

UK

Tinkering with the grid

Keir Starmer mooted the idea of removing green levies from electricity bills for intensive users, but only from 2027. Net Zero Watch pointed out that the cost still needed to be paid, so this move would just increase bills for everyone else (see blog section below).

Net Zero Watch Samizdat: War in Westminster

UK

War in Westminster

The Government threatened to implode over spending cuts. There were signs that the Chancellor wanted to force a scaling back of the ruinously expensive Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Rumours circulated that it would be replaced with a considerably cheaper scheme offering electricity price discountsto heat pump owners. Greens threatened legal action if they didn’t get their way, and with the left-wing of the Parliamentary Party warning of schisms too, Mr Miliband is said to have won out.
