Graeme Reeves: Call An Early Election

The Government has lost the trust and confidence of the electorate and should call an early election.

There is a doctrine under employment law which is analogist to the situation confronting the Labour Government.

Under employment law when there is a loss of trust and  confidence in the relationship between and employer and an employee, caused by the behaviour of an employee, there are grounds for a justifiable dismissal.

That is because trust and confidence goes to the core of the relationship and without it there is no longer a viable relationship.

The 6th Labour Government led by Jacinda Ardern is not only incompetent but also deceitful.

The Prime Minister campaigned and assured the New Zealand electorate that Her Government would be both competent and transparent.

Her Government has failed spectacularly on both counts.

Child Poverty has not decreased and is set to escalate as our mismanaged economy heads into a recession.

Affordable housing has eluded her and as interest rates soar housing will become even less affordable.

For example:

Access to mental health has worsened.

Access to primary and secondary health care has plumbed new depths.

Education is in a mess with large numbers of students exiting the system.

Violent crime is out of control.

The economic outlook is bleak as we head into a self-induced recession.

The rule of Law is under threat.

New taxes have been introduced contrary to a commitment not to introduce any new taxes.

This is not an exhaustive list.

In addition, without the consent of the people of New Zealand the Government has embarked on an unheralded and unprecedented surreptitious destruction of New Zealand’s constitution by conferring disproportionate power on an unelected minority ethnic group based on a fallacious interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi which incorrectly holds that the Treaty created an equal partnership (50/50) between Maori, however defined, and non- Maori.

All of this activity being based on the recommendation contained in the He Puapua report secretly commissioned by the Government and kept secret from the people of New Zealand.

Perhaps the straw which has broken the camel’s back were the events of last week when under urgency the Government, in collusion with the Greens, inserted a clause into the Water Services Entities Bill by way of an SOP (supplementary order paper) with the intention of entrenching an ordinary statute by imposing a 60% vote in the house to repeal it, in flagrant disregard for the rule that no government can bind a successive government except in extraordinary circumstances mainly relating to electoral law.

Even the hither to silent academics have been awoken from their torpor to oppose this carnage of New Zealand’s constitution.

All of the above suggests to me the New Zealand electorate has finally lost its trust and confidence in the 6th Labour Government.

The Government should immediately announce that it recognises that it has lost the trust and confidence of the New Zealand electorate and that it will call an early election in the first quarter of 2023, and simultaneously announce that it will not pass any further non supply related legislation until it has had its mandate renewed by the people of New Zealand in a general election.

Graeme Reeves is a lawyer and former National MP.

I could not agree more! The worst govt nz has evet had. The latest today, where hipkins and ardern claim they don't know how the entrenchment got there is unbelievable. So they should tell us, who is running the country then.?

What a great idea.
Instead they'll probably try to push the next election out so we'll all have to suffer their miserable governance for even longer.

Some of us more intelligent, hard working folk have had no confidence in the bunch of social rejects trying to run this Country since 2017. The corrupt mainstream media have almost stopped using New Zealand in any article and continue to stuff Aotearoa down our throats, National should have the guts to promise a binding referendum regarding our Country's name in the next election. A REAL promise, not an Ardern fairy dust promise. Kiwialan.

Well dream on indeed. I agree with you that the Government has lost the trust of the electorate, and that we ought to be able to elect a new government in whom we may have faith. Hmmm - so many fishhooks.

The very fact that they collectively are so dishonest and corrupt, when surely there must be one or two honest individuals among them, indicates that the venal majority will prevail. Is there any country in which a certain proportion of the ordinary citizens can muster a proportion of votes of no confidence which would force a government to hold an election?

The Adern government has proven themselves to be competent in 2 areas. Firstly they fooled over half of NZers into believing they could run the country. A fairly impressive feat given their fist term was littered with failure. Including the most expensive covid response the world.

The Labour's party's second area of competence is spending mind boggling amounts of our money for worse outcomes. Why? Only a forensic audit of the money trail will reveal the answer to that question.

If there is a good thorough clean out of Liebour in the next election (as there damn well should be) - one guess as to who is prioritised on their list. For sure it won't be the current Maori caucus or Maori MPs getting bumped down the list so they will end up with even greater representation amongst the remaining Labour MPs. It may end up looking like Maori Party (2). Will be interesting to see what happens.

What a wonderful idea, Jacinda and her cuckoo dominated cabinet kicked out in disgrace as the worst government ever. Sadly I have to agree with DeeM, we may have to fight to get an election next year. Power, a politician's co-fentanyl.

Well, I think that I know who is rulling the roest in our ( sorry YOUR ) country.
It is Mahuta Mobabi and she is going to call your country New Zimbabwe.
Sorry guys, but jacintha should step down so madam Mugabi can rule properly and get this country even further down the drain.

Oh ! Sorry this is hate speach and rasism.

Yes this government shows how incomponent they are and unable to use commonsense!
I think there is a need of a debate that no government will be able to govern solo at least that there is a safety net or second chamber or so that this will not happen again. The NZ governor is only a show role and the King doesn't care less about a little country down under. Maybe also a debate if a monarchy suit us or not.
