Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is ready to seek peace under Donald Trump’s “strong leadership” and he “regrets” his White House row – a day after the US President halted military aid to Ukraine. The Mail has more.
The wartime leader today said in a post to X that he was keen to agree on a truce in the sky and sea “immediately, if Russia will do the same”.
It comes after senior British Government sources warned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s position may be untenable without access to American military aid.
An anonymous senior official told the Times that Ukraine could “last a matter of months, maybe less” unless the flow of support from Washington resumes.
Zelensky wrote: “None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians.
“My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.
“We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky — ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure — and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same.
“Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the US to agree a strong final deal.
“We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. And we remember the moment when things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this.
“Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right.
“We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive. Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it in any time and in any convenient format.
“We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively.”
Zelensky’s climb-down came after Trump said today in a post to Truth Social that “tomorrow night will be big”, without explicitly saying what he was announcing.

As per usual all those but the very astute, tried to make this whole episode a "Trump, gotcha moment". Of course someone needs to take the lead in achieving a peace agreement and that person needs to have the trust of all involved. Trump does appear to have a bit of a rapport with Putin. The American people are probably sick of financing another war. The Europeans are simply posturing as usual. As I read somewhere, (something like) 500 million Europeans need 300 million Americans to defeat 180 million Russians. Stuff, RNZ, The Herald, TV1 all piling in, in their total ignorance.
Like our own Winston Peters said: let’s wait for the dust to settle first!
If ever there was a need for common sense evaluations of what is a stake here - this is it!
All those Trump haters need to pull their heads in, take a deep breath and acknowledge that this is all part of the only realistic plan designed to bring a lasting peace to the region.
The one thing that will ensure Putin withdraws from hostilities and never attacks Ukraine again is the guaranteed presence of US nationals on the ground in the Ukrainian mines.
That fact alone will provide the security guarantees Zelensky is asking for while the European NATO countries do most of the heavy lifting defending Europe which they have so far refused to do.
It leaves the US to concentrate on its defence of the Indo/Pacific region were our own interests lie. Simple really!
Thank God for that.
Zelensky‘s tantrum would have been brilliant entertainment if it wasn’t so sad for his people & scary for the rest of us.
In his defence though, he has not been used to dealing with a White House administration that not only understands how shuttle diplomacy works, but advocates personal responsibility. I imagine it was quite a shock to move from endless financial support to ‘pull your head in or else’.
Interesting he called it ‘strong leadership’ though when by definition, true leadership is never anything but.
Oh to have a Vance, Gabbard or Rubio here. I can’t believe I am actually jealous that the Americans have Trump while all we have is spineless idiots with no idea. The marked decline in the value of our dollar since he won being case in point. We are on the fast train to nowhere.
