New Parliamentary Committee to Integrate Tikanga Māori Announced

Today, Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka says that a new committee led by Adrian Rurawhe is working on formally integrating tikanga Māori into Parliament.

Yesterday, Te Pāti Māori MPs Rawiri Waititi, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, and Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke submitted written statements to the Privileges Committee, defending their haka action during the Treaty Principles Bill’s first reading.

Waititi argued the committee’s decision was likely pre-determined and would not consider the cultural significance of the haka.

Speaker: Te Pāti Māori haka defence ‘a complete nonsense’
I think that democracy is an important thing. I don’t think that any one group inside New Zealand should be insisting that their way of doing things is the most appropriate for all of them.”

On that basis, he had directed a group of MPs to consider what changes may need to be made to Standing Orders to ensure the inherited Westminster system of Parliament more fully reflected the New Zealand situation and Article One of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (kawanatanga).

Brownlee said Te Pāti Māori had undermined that process and piece of work through its actions and “grandstanding” protest last November.....

Coalition clash over injury prevention plan for Māori and Pasifika
A new ACC initiative has led to a disagreement within the Government over whether it is compliant with a coalition commitment

The National and Act parties are at odds over efforts to prevent injuries for Māori and Pasifika workers in the manufacturing sector, with the junior coalition partner arguing the plan falls foul of a ban on ‘race-based’ public services.

But ACC Minister Scott Simpson says the initiative is in fact need-based given the two ethnic groups suffer a disproportionately high level of injuries in the sector, while a union leader has.....(paywalled)

Voters will decide future of Māori Wards in local election - Far North District Council
The future of Māori representation at district and regional level will be decided at the local elections this year. When voting for candidates to represent them locally, Far North residents and ratepayers will also be asked to vote in a binding poll about Māori wards and constituencies.

The Māori Ward Poll will ask voters to choose between two simple questions:

* “I vote to keep the Māori ward / constituency”

* “I vote to remove the Māori ward / constituency”

These questions apply to the Far North District Māori Ward and the Northland Regional Council Māori Constituency.....

ACC service improving access and outcomes for Māori
Māori in Manawatu-Whanganui can now be supported by a new ACC service that is making a difference across the country.

ACC data shows Māori were more likely to experience serious life-changing injuries but were 36% less likely to lodge a claim with ACC compared with non Māori.

Māori make up 17.1% of the population but account for only 12.5% of all ACC claims....

Act ramping up pressure on National Party minister Scott Simpson over ACC ‘ethnic outcome targets’
The Act Party is seeking to ramp up pressure on a National Party minister over a disagreement concerning ACC’s “ethnic outcome targets”.

Act today published a letter sent by MP Laura McClure to ACC Minister Scott Simpson this week that claimed a tender issued by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) was “inconsistent” with a Cabinet Office circular, which dictates public service delivery should be based on need, not race.....

News:
'Me tū, me haka!': Te Pāti Māori MPs defend haka in Privileges Committee written submissions
Te Pāti Māori MPs say their haka protest during the Treaty Principles Bill debate was an expression of tikanga, not a breach of parliamentary rules - and they are standing by their actions.

All three MPs - Rawiri Waititi, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke - submitted individual written statements to the Privileges Committee but refused to appear in person on Wednesday, citing a lack of fairness and disregard for tikanga Māori.

They intend to continue with their own public hearing on 7 May.

Privileges Committee chair Judith Collins said the Committee have considered the matter and will be meeting again in the first sitting block to consider these actions further......

Whānau Ora 2.0 rolls out in July — new Māori board takes the lead
Iwi Māori Partnership Board (IMPB) for Auckland, Ngaa Pou Hauora o Taamaki, has released its Community Health Plan for the region, and given its position in Rangitāmiro, the new Whānau Ora commissioning agency for the upper North Island, it has considerable weight to solve the crisis of health inequities for Māori.

Ngaa Pou Hauora o Taamaki CE, Simon Royal, says the new model will be ready to roll out in July, and is designed to not only meet, but exceed, the expectations of whānau.

“Whānau should feel confident that Whānau Ora 2.0 will be in place on the 1st of July and it will deliver what whānau expect — and will, in time, deliver more,” says chairman Simon Royal.....

Ockham’s Toi is the foundation block of a new Auckland suburb
In March of that year, then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced 29.3 hectares of land would be transferred from Unitec to the Crown and three iwi groups for the development of up to 4000 new homes.

Since then an additional 7.6 ha of land has been purchased to expand the scope of the development, and seven mega lots have been put through various fast-track consent processes for subdivision.

One of the three iwi involved is Marutūāhu, and it is their 10ha parcel of land that will become Maungārongo. Ockham is the iwi’s partner in the development of Maungārongo.....

News:
Whangārei developer drops appeal, quits subdivision on sacred Māori land
A Whangārei hapū is celebrating the end of a controversial development, proposed for culturally sacred land.

The land at Onoke Heights, in Te Kamo, is considered wāhi tapu by Ngāti Kahu o Torongare, after it was used historically to treat battle casualties and process the dead.

Developer Onoke Heights Ltd wanted to develop a 93-home subdivision on the 6.9ha site.

Commissioners for the Whangārei District Council approved a resource consent application by the company last year but the hapū appealed this decision in the Environment Court and won.

The developer then applied to the High Court to appeal this decision.

Ngāti Kahu o Torongare spokeswoman Nicki Wakefield said the developer has now dropped its High Court appeal, meaning the Environment Court’s cancellation of resource consent stands....

“Whangārei developer drops appeal, quits subdivision on sacred Māori land”?

Psychological engineering and guilt programming (thought control) at work.
We have moved from equal rights to “engineered imbalance”, from justice for all to justice selectively applied. The end goal is not justice, not harmony, but a population too confused to resist and too fragmented to unite, as this “ideological virus” takes hold.

The end result will be a disaster - for the majority of people.

Whānau Ora 2.0 rolls out in July — new Māori Iwi Partnership board takes the lead.

Oh goodie, another public private partnership come to save us.

The occupancy of the Maungoronga block ill be of interest. Does development by maori mean that maori will occupy on especially favourable terms and in numbers? Will it become like the recent nearby externally attractive state development; shouting children forever evident, neglected and cluttered front yards, blue tarpaulins draped over balconies, local streets lined with cars? I have observed the work on the old Mason clinic site with curiosity. If anyone can explain the vast scale excavation, rock crushing and rock replacement effort I would be interested. Occupants will presumably get used to forever having to explain and spell spell their address.

Seems to me the Te Pati defence of the stone age cannibal war dance haka could more aptly be applied to the Dun Mihaka whakapohane salute. if picked up by all members and performed from their seats would make world screens more then the haka did. Very many situations would warrant the performance by various individuals and parties. It is sad that comedy has been hounded from our tv screens. Mcphail and Gadsby could have built upon. And where is Tremaine?

Remember, tikanga and other Maori concepts are necessarily vague. All many want are specific examples.

Regarding Potaka/Rurawhe and working on "formal integration" of tikanga Māori into Parliament - this must be stopped dead in its tracks! Brownlee does not help as he used the term 'tikanga of the house' a while back. I'm frankly speechless with rage and surely many others must be too? TPM control of our House of Reps would appear to be all but complete.

Anonymous said...

Tikanga in the House? Same situation as saying there are Principles in the Treaty - there are NONE. Frankly, our Parliament is becoming more like a parody of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy with its rigidly defined lines of doubt and uncertainty. For Gawds sake, when will these children running the show get back in their cots?

Robert Arthur said...

It is preposterous the way National repeatedly succembs to maori extremes. Among maori it must elicit much Willcox style chuckling. The hikoi clearly spooked National, as was its intent. Any tikanga faintly acceptable will be contrived post colonist. Karakia will be a disaster. Each will have to be pre translated and pre approved or all sorts of sly mana seeking slights will be artfully included. Karakia are a waste of everybody's time, plus all the vetting staff. There is no place whatever for the stone age cannibal war dance haka.We already have members in outlandish dress and wearing cowboy hats inside, presumably justified as tikanga. Will non maori be free to similarly ridicule any tikanga adopted? It will be patu, taiaha, grass skirts without Jockeys soon.

Banana Republic imminent. This has to be a deliberate plan.

Can someone please remind the coalition that TPM are not in the coalition and co governance in parliament is not a thing...yet. If they keep giving in to them every time they have a tanty then they will keep throwing their toys out of the cot every time they dont like something. This is ridiculous.

Hold on people , Mr Gary Judd KC introduced to the house legislation to stop the introduction of Tikaga to the law papers taught at Auckland University. The issue is accepted 21 working days after 8th April 2025. I guess this is Parliamentary in house working days which would be 17th July 2025.
Surely this will supersede the Potaka and National scurrilous attempt to circumvent Gary Judd KC. This was in early April - Breaking Views

This is disgusting..... gutless MPs everywhere. The beginning of Civil War... NZers have had a gutsful of stupidity and Maorification. Europeans [ I will NOT use "pakeha " again] have tolerated a lot of bullying, but now the Chinese [civilised for thousands of years] Indian, Arab etc etc have to bow to stoneage stupidity. Glad to be 82 and not long for this stupid world.

Good idea. The whole House could drop drawers and fart too !

Go for it Gary Judd KC ...!!!!

Please check : Judd is not an MP. His Tikanga concerns : were these not rejected by the Regulations Review Committee?

Basil Walker said...

Anon:8.46 ..Gary Judd is a KC . The Southland National MP, Mooney supported the introduction of the legislation into the house .on April 8th 2025 as posted on Breaking Views of that date

Yes - but Judd's concerns related to teaching Tikanga in law schools.
https://lawnews.nz/misc/parliament-receives-motion-to-scrap-compulsory-tikanga-maori-for-core-law-subjects/.

Here the issue is Tikanga in Parliament where process is governed by the Westminster system and common law.
A different domain.
