Public opinion turns against Net Zero policies
New polling and focus groups for The Times show a surge in climate scepticism. One in four Britons now say global warming is exaggerated, while support for net zero measures — petrol car bans, heat pumps, higher gas bills — has collapsed. Voters increasingly see climate as a low priority beside crime, the NHS and the cost of living, as the political consensus on net zero frays.
Ratcliffe pulls investments out of the UK
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s energy empire has pulled all investment in Britain over Labour’s tax raid on North Sea oil and gas production. Ratcliffe said: “We have stopped investing in Britain. Our future investment will not be [in] the UK. There’s no question of that.”
Farage almost as trusted as Labour on climate
New polling for The Times finds 22% of voters trust Nigel Farage on climate policy, barely behind Keir Starmer (24%) and Ed Miliband (23%). The result reflects a surge in scepticism as support for costly net zero measures falls.
Miliband refuses to leave DESNZ in reshuffle
Sir Keir Starmer tried to move Ed Miliband out of his energy brief and into the housing department but the former Labour leader refused. The climbdown shows Starmer knows Miliband’s net zero agenda is politically costly - but also that it remains untouchable inside Labour.
SDP leader: UK energy crisis has cost us a year’s GDP
SDP leader William Clouston writes in The Critic that soaring power costs are the root of Britain’s productivity crisis. Since 2004, industrial electricity prices have jumped 260%, costing the economy the equivalent of a year’s GDP. The SDP’s Energy Abundance plan calls for state-led coal, gas and nuclear, a new national utility, and fixing prices at 10p/kWh to restore growth.
Reform councils scrap Net Zero targets
Councillors at Reform UK-run North Northamptonshire Council have voted unanimously to scrap their Net Zero by 2030 target.

Ørsted retreats
Ørsted has raised $9bn to steady its finances but will scale back global ambitions, focusing on Europe and a “value over volume” approach. Once the world’s top offshore wind developer, it is now pulling back from the US and onshore projects as rising costs and hostile politics bite.
US energy secretary slams Net Zero targets
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has lambasted plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050, calling the climate target “a colossal train wreck” that countries will most likely fail to achieve. Wright also accused the UK government of strangling the North Sea.

Maurice appeared on the BBC’s Moral Maze to discuss the morality of Net Zero. He also joined Jeremy Kyle to discuss new polling showing a marked shift in public opinion on climate policy. Meanwhile, ConservativeHome published his response to a series of essays by the Conservative Environment Network, challenging their conflation of environmental stewardship with costly climate activism.
Andrew featured on GB News to discuss the growing shift in public opinion on climate change, highlighting how rising costs and energy insecurity are reshaping the debate. He also published a new article on our website warning that current UK energy policy risks leaving the country with dwindling options – and even the prospect of a return to coal if the lights are to be kept on (see link below).
Kathryn Porter appeared on Spiked’s podcast to discuss the risk of blackouts.

The UK is going back to coal
When the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining, we rely on so-called ‘firm capacity’ to step in and keep the lights on. In the UK, that means gas-fired and nuclear power stations and pretty

Dr Will Happer, climate scientist, will be visiting NZ in early December courtesy of Groundsweell. He comes from a slightly different angle. He agrees that humans contribute to some global warming, but that is not harmful, as more people die from extreme cold than extreme heat. Also, more CO2 means a greener planet.
