Ian Bradford: Large sea level rises? No. Just more scaremongering.

Isn’t sea level rise a matter of common sense?  How any reading this article can say they have seen significant sea level rise in their lifetime?  I know of three beaches that are actually building out. I’m sure there are others.

Let’s begin with a UN headline from 1989.

Reducing emissions as directed by the UN/IPCC and the Greenies, is actually warming the Earth. 

It’s all to do with Aerosols.  In the atmosphere, aerosols in general,  block the sun’s radiation from reaching the Earth.  Aerosols are actually small particles or droplets, that float in the air.  They come in many forms, both natural and industrial and include, sea salt, mineral dust, ash, sulphates, nitrates and black carbon (soot). So we are talking about wildfire smoke, volcanic gases, and many human activities. Soot has a warming effect but this is well overshadowed by the cooling effect of the other aerosols.  In fact no one has taken much note of the cooling effect of aerosols, but scientists lately have found that their cooling effect may be greater than realised.

About four years ago, the then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern came on TV and declared “We have a climate emergency.”

Without any justification for this statement, she sent a high proportion of the country into a panic mode. It was to come out that humans were putting Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere at an unprecedented rate and this was causing global warming which would be catastrophic if allowed to continue. Later, cows were in the firing line too emitting Methane which was also contributing to global warming.

New Zealand scientist Dr Kelvin Duncan has written Global Warming: A Counter-blaste to the Man-made global warming hypothesis to clear away a psychosis created by repeated pronouncements that we humans are solely responsible for present climate change.

Changing the Weather: Making it rain or making a drought. It’s been going on for ages, and so has  geoengineering,  a term for Carbon Dioxide removal and solar radiation management.        

Making clouds produce rain is called cloud seeding. Silver Iodide has commonly been used for cloud seeding. Most rainfall begins with the growth of ice crystals from super-cooled ice droplets in the upper parts of clouds. The Silver Iodide particles are meant to encourage the growth of new ice particles. The ice particles so formed eventually become too heavy and begin to fall turning to water as they do so and produce rain.

Mike Hosking: Global boiling? Tell that to the world using coal

There was no shortage of irony on Friday as UN boss Antonio Guterres, who might just suffer from a dose of alarmism, was declaring global boiling.

It was also announced by the International Energy Agency that the world this year is using more coal than ever, and there are no real signs of that changing.

Guterres says a lot of alarmist stuff and my fear is that this sort of language turns people off.

That the streets of Athens and beaches of Alicante had never baked in the midday heat. ‘Italy swelters’, ‘Holiday hell’, ‘Unbearable’, scream the headlines, as if a most unusual calamity, unknown in the annals of time, had struck southern Europe.

All true believers of The Science™ of climate change have taken careful note of the lessons offered by the coronavirus pandemic during 2020–22 for managing the ‘climate emergency.’ The two agendas share nine items in common that should leave us worried, very worried. 

The first is the revolting spectacle of the hypocrisy of the exalted elites who preach to the deplorables the proper etiquette of abstinence to deal with the emergency, and their own insouciant exemption from a restrictive lifestyle. Ian Bradford: Speed reduction to 90 kph for all SUV’s

Recently, Len Gillman, Professor of Biogeography at the Auckland University of Technology wrote an article in which he stated that SUV’s should have a speed limit of 90kph. Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of plants and animals. 

He began his article by changing the name of our major city to Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland and later the name of the country to the fictional name Aotearoa.  He seems to have a mandate for doing this from somewhere.

His main point for reducing the speed limit for SUV’s was to limit “Carbon” emissions. Presumably he means Carbon Dioxide emissions as Carbon is either a black solid called soot, a grey solid called graphite, or a hard, usually clear solid, called diamond. Clearly then, Professor Gillman is a climate alarmist, who believes Carbon Dioxide is causing global warming and probably adverse weather events. 

Mike Butler: Two reporters, dogma, and a cyclone

Failure to understand and accept the basic differences between science and dogma raises serious questions about the judgement of two people paid to report the news. In an opinion piece by one of these people posted on the Newsroom site, a kicker said:

"Failure to understand and accept basic scientific facts raises serious questions about the judgment of prospective legislators."(1)

Politicking by these two activists posing as journalists started on Tuesday night when Three News political editor Jenna Lynch reported on National Party MP Maureen Pugh uttering the "heresy" that the climate has always changed, but she was still awaiting evidence that humans are causing changes.

Point of Order: Does NZ need to be out in front of the big polluters?

Climate Change Minister James Shaw who led the NZ delegation to COP27 reckons it’s crunch time for countries to step up and take urgent action at home on global warming.

Shaw tells the world at Sharm al-Sheik NZ will do everything it can to urgently cut climate pollution and build a safer, cleaner future.

He concedes global progress is “slow”, but says: “we still have a choice about the future we want to build. Every tenth of a degree of global warming prevented matters; every tonne of pollution we cut makes a difference; every decision we take counts”.

Clive Bibby: Lambs to the slaughter

Any farmer trying to get space for lambs that need to be killed before they cut their teeth will identify with this very apt description which could also be applied to a wider difficulty that is affecting the whole country. Unfortunately the problem in all its forms is a direct result of the government’s obsession with an ideological target that is being increasingly seen as a misplaced interpretation of world climatic events - particularly in how we in New Zealand should react in mitigation to the perceived threat of global warming.

Are cows causing global warming?  No, it’s a lot of bull! 

The IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, formed by the United Nations, initially declared that humans were putting Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere and that was causing global warming. Then that was changed to climate change because of the embarrassment of at least 15 years of no temperature change from 1998, and then a cooling in recent years.  Then all sorts of weather events were put down to more CO₂and finally methane CH₄ also became a problem. Cows were in the firing line and it was pushed that we should give up eating meat and do away with cows. Perhaps we would have no milk either!

It is generally agreed that there has been a global temperature rise of just 1 Deg C since the Industrial Revolution 170 years ago.

Various scientists have done research on how this 1 deg C rise has occurred by studying ice cores. Syun-Ichi Akasofu from the International Arctic Centre at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, found that there seems to be an approximately linear increase in temperature since about 1800 to the present.  Naturally, there will be fluctuations of temperature with some periods of warming and some of cooling during that time, but mathematicians can fit a straight line graph to the values. In other words, there is no general upwards trend nor any general downwards trend in temperatures. Akasofu’s research was supported by further studies by Frizsche et al in 2006 , Polyakov et al, Burroughs, and Tarrand and Nordli.

Ian Bradford: The Distinction Between Climate Change, Weather and Human Induced Global Warming

All scientists and many non scientists would agree that there is climate change. 

Climate change has been occurring for millions, in fact billions of years. Nearly all of it without any human influence. Now suddenly, according to the climate alarmists, humans are responsible for climate change, even though Carbon Dioxide levels have reached as high as 7000ppm in the past. They are at a very low 410ppm at present. Was it all those dinosaurs emitting CO2? 

What used to be called global warming was changed to climate change because from 1998 the earth has actually cooled slightly, though the cooling has increased in recent years, especially in the northern hemisphere. The cooling was an embarrassment for the climate alarmists. 

Climate change covers anything.

Despite Green/ABC propaganda, recent Australian floods were not caused by coal, cattle or cars. Weather is driven by winds; solar energy powers the winds and draws moisture for them from the oceans. These eternal natural rain-making processes have been aided recently by two extra factors. 

 

Firstly a big La Nina weather event in the Pacific Ocean has left warmer water closer to Australia. 

 

Secondly, there is increased underwater volcanism in this region as evidenced by the volcanic eruptions near Vanuatu.

Dr Duncan is no lightweight. He has a PhD in biology from Canterbury University, taught biology and statistics and became Dean of Science there, was a member of the Royal Society New Zealand and of the New York Academy of Sciences, and has worked on developing products including a scar tissue repair, and a skin cancer cure.

Like a distinguished professor, in his new book Dr Duncan patiently goes through the science related to each aspect of the global warming hypothesis. He presents alarmist reasoning, shows the flaws, and hands out fail grades.

Matt Ridley: How Global Warming Can Be Good For Us

Global warming is real. It is also – so far – mostly beneficial. This startling fact is kept from the public by a determined effort on the part of alarmists and their media allies who are determined to use the language of crisis and emergency. The goal of Net Zero emissions in the UK by 2050 is controversial enough as a policy because of the pain it is causing. But what if that pain is all to prevent something that is not doing net harm?

The biggest benefit of emissions is global greening, the increase year after year of green vegetation on the land surface of the planet. Viv Forbes: Cycles, not Carbon Dioxide, Control Climate.

The war on hydro-carbon fuels will have no measurable effect on global temperatures. Nor will carbon taxes, carbon offsets or subsidies for wind turbines or solar panels. There are climate controllers far bigger than human CO2 at work.

No place on Earth lives in the mythical average global temperature. Earth’s temperature dances to cyclic rhythms every hour, every day, every month, every season, every year, and to every beat of the sun-spot and glacial cycles.

The daily cycle of Earth’s rotation causes continual changes in radiant energy received by and transmitted from every spot on Earth. It produces the cold at dawn and the afternoon warmth.
