In 2022 Labour "gifted" 20% of the 5GL spectrum to Maori - not a treaty settlement - a "gift" - along with this gift, $75 million was provided to establish and support the entity (Kāhui Whakaata - the Māori Spectrum Entity) during its formative years.
For years, the spectrum was treated as a national resource - Governments licensed or auctioned it to telecommunications companies, who paid for the right to use specific frequency bands. It was largely an administrative process, and the associated revenue would have benefited all New Zealanders.
Now, the new entity can lease the spectrum rights to mobile operators such as Spark, One New Zealand or 2degrees - the companies that already operate the national mobile networks. Unlike telecommunications companies, the entity does not need to build towers or run networks. It simply creates a revenue stream but with no responsibility!
While exact figures depend on future agreements, estimates indicate the potential annual revenue from spectrum leasing could initially be in the vicinity of $30 million per year (other sources suggest that this could be closer to $100 million) and likely to increase.

Mobile data demand continues to grow rapidly, and new wireless technologies are constantly being developed. Every time the government releases additional spectrum bands for new services, expanded 5G or eventually 6G the entity’s entitlement will likely still apply. As wireless technology expands so will the revenue potential.
This is simply a "RACIST HANDOUT" - it is not a one-off allocation, it is in perpetuity. You may well ask - can it be retracted? In theory yes. Parliament can change almost anything, however, in practice reversing a settlement would be politically difficult and it would not be without serious compensation.
The settlement was in lieu of a potential Treaty claim, Maori claimed it was a "taonga" - as they would.
Historically, we know the word ‘taonga’ referred to physical treasures - carved objects, land, heirlooms, or culturally significant artefacts, its original meaning was as many of the early dictionaries state "was property procured by the spear", it grew to be valuables and possessions. But radio spectrum is not something you can see or hold. It is simply part of the electromagnetic spectrum, a natural physical phenomenon discovered by scientists and used by engineers a modern "invention".
The question arises - If invisible radio waves can qualify as a "taonga" , what about, the air we breathe, sunlight falling on solar panels, wind turning turbines and of course water.
How thin can the meaning of taonga be stretched to make it a revenue-generating asset.

Broadcast radio and TV are dead mediums according to commentators on this site, so even if this was a real problem, who cares? The future is Newsmax and Sean Plunkett isn’t it??
'Radio waves' are a taonga all right; a pakeha taonga. They are a randomly varying electromagnetic force which also goes by the name 'light'.
That force only becomes a radio spectrum when it is processed by technology - receivers and transmitters - developed using European science.
To claim that radio waves are a Maori taonga is a lie and our Government taking them from us is a theft. By doing that, our Government has gone beyond gullible to abject stupidity. They have also devalued my European culture of philosophy, science, technology and industry which has been developed over thousands of years to become the highest human achievement.
It is an extreme form of racist derangement which is ruining our once excellent nation, itself a product of advanced European culture.
The stupidity we are witnessing and being forced to participate is mind-blowing and it will go down in history are one of the most egregious errors of all time.
What a shame.
According to Mona Jackson, one of the authors of He Puapua (Labour's Maori policy), Taonga means "what is important to us". That means water, air, and it seems, especially free money. That is why He Puapua is a wish list.
What isn't considered taonga? That is an easy one.
Anything that there can't be a monetary claim made against. So everything, even those not to be discovered for centuries, is taonga. The interesting part will be, once they run out of pakeha to rort, it will revert back to intertribal competition as it was prior to the arrival white men.
Of course water is a 'taonga'. It goes into making beer. Hence the upcoming tribal claim on Lion Breweries.
I find it very difficult to understand how Labour could do something so stupid. How does Māori have anything at all to do with 5GL spectrum? They did not know it existed, have any technology to access it or utilise it, and any Maori that currently have anything at all to do with it gained the knowledge and equipment involved by importation from overseas. Mind-boggling stupid behaviour.
Maori have been claiming radiata pine as taonga as so many Maori are involved in the forestry industry - so by extension the benefits of radiata belong to Maori.
Broadtech Ltd was bought out in recent years by Maori.
Broadtech Ltd is a subsidary of Tu Atea Network Services Ltd which is owned by Tu Atea Ltd
From the Tu Atea website :
Through strategic governance and policy engagement, we advocate for Maori interests in spectrum management, rural connectivity, innovation, and workforce development - bridging the digital divide and empowering Maori communities.
Represent Maori interests when the government is making decisions on telecommunications spectrum allocation and management.
Develop policies to ensure equitable access to spectrum for Maori.
Support initiatives like the Maori Spectrum Entity and Ka Hao Maori Digital Technology Fund.
Build Maori capabilities to participate and lead in the telecommunications sector.
Key Objectives
Secure Maori spectrum rights and control.
Improve rural connectivity and access to high-speed internet.
Create pathways for Maori into high-value tech and telecommunications careers.
Shape inclusive policies that align with Maori aspirations and national goals.
This is another fine example of Maori taking advantage of naive Ardern who set this up.
Don't give me any BS about Maori matauranga.
They have demanded and been given control of some of the radio frequency spectrum - no where else in the world have governments given away spectrum rights based on race.
Luxon and biassed friends stop this crap immediately.
About as bloody stupid as Maori demanding and being given rights to be on the NZ Space Agency eg
TPK ensures the interests of whanau, hapu and iwi are reflected in policy development, including through kaitiakitanga to enable protection and appropriate use of matauranga and other taonga.
This is insanity. The Whole Language based remedial reading programme , Reading Recovery developed by Marie Clay was declared Taonga . Unfortunately this jewel in the crown of the Whole Language reading method has now been thoroughly discredited and shown to actually be destructive to a child's reading development .
Does this mean RR will need to go through some sort of desacredification ( invented word), de -Taonga-ing in the same way holy objects or churches do? Is there even a Karakia for this ?
Here a claim, there a claim, everywhere a claim claim, our New Zealand now has gone, ei-ei-oh!
Why is there any discussion about Maori having extraordinary rights to the radio spectrum ?
The do not have any rights above all of us !!!
Having fractional Maori DNA does not automatically give anyone any more benefit.
Will the authorities stop allowing Maori to make specious claims without any constitutional rights ?
If you are sitting in a government / council office and some ethnic group makes a submission claiming privileges based on ethnicity, just dismiss it.
I bet you never see a submission based on European "rights" ?
So why is a Maori one even considered ?
And another biggie, is geothermal. Who would have guessed parking your lardy backside in a hot pool on a cold night would give you eternal rights to geothermal power generation. Of course matauranga would have figured it out soon enough, given their advanced skills in m̶e̶t̶a̶l̶l̶u̶r̶g̶y̶ , whoops, I mean't stone and flax.
What amazes me is that this minority of citizens no longer have to ask for wealth transfer from others to them - the wretched bureaucrats offer it to them. Go figure.
I am seriously concerned with the proliferation of Maori based ridiculous grifted handouts. Surely it is not the elected parliamentarians, therefore it must be the unelected bureaucracy.
I note they are all cloaked in Maori language twaddle making them ostensibly unknown and anonymous as they grift from the public purse .
