I’m presuming many readers will have received e-mails from political party’s and political ginger groups announcing their roles in yesterdays announcement that the government will change the law so only elected councillors can vote on council committees.
And we all say well done to them all for the parts they played in getting the government to move on this issue where democracy was being pushed aside and political strength and power would be determined by your ancestry! The cornerstone of democracy, one person, one vote will be preserved!
This announcement by Minister Watts strips unelected appointees of their power to vote on your rates, property, and community.
Or does it?
Is this just another “Claytons Change” by a government that acts as school crossing “Lollipop men” halting democracy and waving on through the ever increasing Maori power and influence?

This point in the article below, to me, illustrates just how duplicitous this National led government is – Watts said on Tuesday that once the law is passed councils will have six months to review their appointments before the law change takes effect
As the writer says – It will be unlikely that the necessary law change will be implemented before the election.
Is the government serious about stopping co-governance?
Is this government just taking the p-ss?
If those 2 questions are unfounded; why not implement a law change under urgency? The government are well practiced in that skill!

The question is when, Minister?
The Minister has finally acknowledged the message following months of dithering.
The Government will stop unelected individuals from voting on council committees, a move an Act MP has characterised as closing an “anti-democratic loophole”
Meanwhile the head honcho at FNDC says he’ll ignore such missives and continue on unabated. At least I think that is what his word salad in Manglish says.
“So I say to those that want to try and detract or to put focus on us on whether or not the instruments that we’re implementing in here to include Māori at the final district council are right or wrong, that argument and that debate needs to go to central government who have legislated that it’s absolutely fine and we are carrying on with our mahi.”
Congratulations to Councillor Ms Davina Smolders for standing her ground and initially raising the issue months ago.
So Minister Watts, when? Today would be preferable, under urgency!
From further reading:
This cornered prick is really taking the piss.
Watts said on Tuesday that once the law is passed councils will have six months to review their appointments before the law change takes effect
Any such appointments should be axed immediately. It will be unlikely that the necessary law change will be implemented before the election.
Only being seen to be doing something to chase votes.
Potaka and Luxon will be watching closely that nothing more is promised.
Now, what about Maori Wards?
Pee Kay writes he is from a generation where common sense, standards, integrity and honesty are fundamental attributes. This article was first published HERE

The test will be how the Govt enforces the ruling - expect some councils (the Far North version for example) to give them the extended finger. I doubt that Minister Watts has the nerve for the inevitable conflict; but I will be happy if he proves me wrong.
Its really hard to accept the only time we make progress in many areas is an election year!!
National need to wake up. I hope this new legislation gets passed soon, and it is enough to slow this very negative trend of race division
Davina Smolders will have a tough next six months! Think of how quickly these undemocratic people will act if they have to.
I wouldn't give Simon Watts any credit for this. ACT were the only supportive party behind Davina. From what I could see, Watts tried to wash his hands of the whole debacle. NZF came around eventually. Davina shows what one determined person is capable of.
Why do we commend politicians belated action on something that should be a no-brainer as soon as they are made aware of the situation.
If politicians are scared to confront a section of the population then our democracy will be even further eroded.
Yes, "This cornered p**** is really taking the piss" - if this National 'led' coalition does not deal with this under urgency and stop this pre-election gas-lighting, we will know they are not serious about dealing with race based preference.
What a truly gutless and arguably duplicitous prick!
Aside from the unwarranted delay, what he hasn't said is of even more concern. What of all the decisions that these unelected have been involved in passing to date, let alone those in the months ahead? Will they be revisited, or is the Minister kindly allowing them more time to empty the cookie jar?
As always, the devil is in the detail!
The title asked "A PYRHIC (sic) VICTORY?" In this case, unless it is dealt with swiftly and thoroughly it could, like much we are witnessing from National, become a defeat in disguise. The door needs to be slammed shut and kept shut to stop the likes of Mayor Moko thumbing his nose at democracy.
Excellent effort ACT to stop the Maori anti democracy direction in NZ .
However, Minister Watts has a long proven record of twiddling and furrowed brow over Paris Accord , Climate Change et al and nothing real and pragmatic will eventuate before the election.
So they're all on the payroll for another six months at least. How the hell did they get on the payroll?
No wonder rates are skyrocketing.
The situation is outrageous and I don't see it as being addressed anywhere near properly.
National are aiding and abetting Maori supremacy while pretending to be reigning it it. They are despicable and Minister Watts is a spineless git.
