Māori education leaders seek assurances over NZQA restructure
Māori education leaders are seeking assurances that specialist expertise supporting Māori assessment and qualifications will be retained as the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) consults staff on a proposed restructure of its Assessment Division.
NZQA confirmed to Pūkāea that staff are currently being consulted on the proposal but said it could not comment further while the consultation process remains underway.
PSA Te Kaihautū Māori Jack McDonald said the union was still preparing its formal response, with the proposal having been released to staff only last Wednesday.
McDonald believed the proposal would have wider implications for Māori education.
“The proposed restructure has potential to impact all Māori learners and education providers across the country through the proposed disestablishment of Ngā Poutoko Aromatawai Māori, which is a key internal partnership structure that oversees and protects the use of mātauranga Māori in assessment practice,” he said.....

Cabinet faces ‘no-brainer’ decision on ancient migration waka
The fate of the waka believed to be Rangihoua - a double-hulled ocean-going waka thought to be part of an early migration from Hawaiki centuries ago - is now in the hands of Cabinet.
Described as one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Aotearoa and the wider Pacific, the waka remains buried in coastal dunes on Rēkohu, the Chatham Islands.

The fate of the waka believed to be Rangihoua - a double-hulled ocean-going waka thought to be part of an early migration from Hawaiki centuries ago - is now in the hands of Cabinet.
Described as one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Aotearoa and the wider Pacific, the waka remains buried in coastal dunes on Rēkohu, the Chatham Islands.
Carbon dating has dated the wrecked waka to between 1440 and 1470, making it one of the oldest known taonga of its kind in New Zealand history.

Regarding the waka firewood found in the dunes, just think what the money wasted on such like could do for our economic wellbeing. If Maori want the firewood, let them dig it up with their funds grifted from the rest of us via Treaty fraud. I and probably many others say enough of this nonsense. Get rid of the Land Court and the Waitangi Tribunal.
Another chunk of Maori craft abandoned , left to rot, and forgotten about for generations.
Now they expect us nasty colonists to restore and revere it forever.

Clearly nobody has been concerned about it for 550 years.
According to legend, this was also the exact same whaka that circumnavigated the Antarctic some 300 years ago.

Re the waka, if left entirely to polynesian groups a truly objective interpretation is unlikely. It would probably become the taxi used for repeat star navigated trips to and from Hawiiki. It is a much safer subject than most excavations which even if only of a few cannibal feast bones, immediately disqualify vast worthwhile area from (pakeha) development. Very many worthwhile articfacts have een preserved by pakeha intervention although now reluctantly acknowledged (ie the meeting house in Auckland museum)
When this waka was first reported, we learned that the timbers it was made from were NZ Podocarp trees.

Hence, the waka is not from some mythical Hawaiki.
It is strange that no-one has yet stated what plant fibres the ropes and cordage are made of. They should be easy to identify..... my guess is NZ Flax.
Many maori hangers on, to accompany for some reasona few heads of enemy slaves, tattooed and killed to order and sold in Sydney, gained a govt sponsored trip to Europe and back. With care the waka will not only provide years of employement but should ensure sponsored tours of world museums for several groups. to spread the news and enchant with haka..
