Dr Oliver Hartwich: Greyhound racing law change is legal overreach

Let me state this clearly at the outset: I have never placed a bet on a greyhound. I have never owned a greyhound. If I were a dog, I would likely prefer a soft sofa to a hard track.

I am not writing this because I have a passion for racing, either. I am writing this because I have a passion for the Rule of Law.

Racing Minister Winston Peters has announced the Government’s plans to end greyhound racing in New Zealand.

“This is not a decision that is taken lightly but is ultimately driven by protecting the welfare of racing dogs.

The big news from the Government today is that action is being taken to stop the country from going to the dogs.

The announcement was bayed by Racing Minister Winston Peters after the Government decided to end greyhound racing in New Zealand.
