Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: National needs to keep fighting on education

If you're a regular listener, you'll know we've spent a lot of time predicting that voters would hate Chris Hipkins' claim in the TVNZ leaders' debate that he would scrap the hour of reading, writing and maths for kids.

And now I have the numbers to prove that prediction was bang on.

I've been given a copy of a poll conducted by Curia in the days after that debate and it shows that 74 percent of Kiwis want the hour a day of reading, writing and maths to stay. Among Labour's own voters, 63 percent want the hour a day to stay. Only 23 percent of Labour voters want Chippy to scrap it.

That's almost three Labour voters wanting it for every one who wants it gone.

None of this is a surprise to me because you'd have been an idiot, or an education union member, to kid yourself that Erica Stanford's education reforms aren't working.

But how I got this poll is actually illuminating.

I got a call from a guy involved in public affairs but this isn't his wheelhouse. He doesn't work in education and he doesn't work for a political party. Education policy in an election has absolutely nothing to do with his job. But he said he was giving the poll to me because he's a parent and he's deeply passionate about making sure Labour doesn't undo the good work Erica is doing in primary schools, where his child is.

And this is what I'm consistently hearing.

I've had another person in politics say a very similar thing to me and I've told you about this already. They took off their politics hat for a minute and said that, as a parent, the most important thing to them is Erica Stanford's education reforms.

Now, I cannot tell you what a bum note this is for Hipkins.

He needs to walk this back as fast as he possibly can. The risk for him is that National realises what they've got here and starts weaponizing it against him.

He needs to tell his mates in the unions to back off because he's not doing it.

And for National, I'll say it again: what are you doing?

Fight on the education front.

Erica Stanford should be all over the media during this campaign. She should be standing next to Christopher Luxon at every available opportunity.

She is their MVP, their most valuable player, and her education reforms are probably the most important thing National has done and the thing voters do not want to lose.

Yes...spot on!
Richard Prebble has made a similar comment on the Brash & Mitchell site.
Who is running the National campaign...some dullard? Stanford IS the Nats MVP....use her skills to a greater degree if you wish to win...Labour should be shredded with their record in education!🤦‍♂️

If Hipkins walks this back, Christmas dinner with his mother will be a frosty affair.

Exactly.: couldn't agree more. Education is the hill on which Labour deserves to die. And I hope that it does.

I swear National are trying to lose.

All Luxflakes wants to talk about is Digital Id, wasting millions on climate fantasies & learning Maori. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

This says it all.
Here National have a crucial advantage that even Blind Freddie could see.
But they — and their incompetent advisers — are incapable of changing tack and appear intent on ignoring what the voters want.
Is it incompetence, arrogance, or hubris?
In the end it doesn’t matter. Like it doesn’t matter which issue you choose — education, race relations, or “climate crisis”.
It’s as if National and Luxon think they operate in a vacuum in which the wider electorate has no influence.
No matter.
They’re about to learn the hard way that that’s not the way things work.

As an educator I just can't believe people are not interested in children's futures. Many think the West is going to win or lose on our education.
Children are 25% of the population but 100% of our future.
England has been the only country that has not had a decrease in standards in the basics in the last PERLS international tests. They have mandated explicit phonics and implemented knowledge rich curriculum . Erica is following the English model . We are severely handicapped by the insistence on Te Reo . Little kids are being confused by having to learn Te Reo and English letter sounds . They are quite different and English is the most difficult European language
to become literate in . Nobody benefits from forcing complexities onto teachers like having to learn of English sounds ( phonemes) and Maori ones and the new maths with fractions , decimals and percentages , which many primary school teachers are not familiar with
Feel sorry for the workload teachers have with the new syllabus. Easy solution -GET RID of Te Reo and make life much easier. A hobby language for kids to learn in their spare time .
Cut out all the karakia etc then there is time for an hour for each of the basics .Gaynor

Bang on, Gaynor. The woke 'left' are too stupid to see what is important for our future. They'd prefer to dumb-down our children and fill their minds with stone age mumbo jumbo - all the while promoting vast sums of money to be spent dividing New Zealand depending on some claimed partial ancestry.
