Mr Abercrombie, other industry advocates and the Labour led opposition have been dead set against the changes but now they’re slowly admitting that things are better.
It makes you wonder why they were so negative from the get-go, and I can only put it down to tribalism.
If it’s an idea from the right, it has to be evil and wrong and bad for the kids and the vulnerable.
Now this is also a weakness on the right. The Coalition spent the first year merrily throwing out any initiatives from the previous government whether it had good aspects or not.
The us good, them bad narrative is childish. And expensive and slowing us down.
3 Waters was thrown out and replaced with the same thing, the only difference being it’s voluntary with no governance. The upshot is that we’re even further behind in finding funds to fix our water supply.
I could go on.
The cancelled ferries when the problem was actually the gold-plated ports.
Chris Hipkins big mistake in the leader's debate was to threaten to throw out an hour of tuition of the basics if they get in. A policy that is popular with parents and Mr Abercrombie even said works.
These flip flops from all sides are exhausting.
When National won the last election, they said the adults are back. Well, when is that actually going to happen.

Those who an, do. Those who cannot, teach. Those who cannot teach join the union in an attempt to hide their mediocrity in the union pool.
Thank you Andrew for your take on the educational aspect of the leaders debate. .
What Standford has done is actually revolutionary , We have not had early explicit phonic instruction taught in NZ schools since 1950. so you perhaps gather this is very revolutionary , not just a flip -flop.
There is an organisation working extremely hard called the Aotearoa Educational Collective ( AEC) to derail the changes Standford has implemented Rosemary Hipkins , mum of Chris aligns strongly with this organisation , so I surmise he has acquired his determination to reverse all the changes to possibly support his mum's views.
These are not the perspective of .international educational research in cognitive or neuro science, what is happening in all other English speaking countries , nor what parents want or what teachers are observing inclassrooms. These are improvements in children's learning of the basics.
The romantic philosophy of child -centered learning -the ideology that has caused our appalling downward trend in the basics has had its day in the sun . But its adherents desperately want to hold onto it .
This is what I call selective use of facts to fit the narrative! There is a fundamental difference between the two water reforms- who makes the decisions about water governance. And the ferries change was to get what we can afford. This is not flip flop!
