Judge Ema Aitken and the Architecture of Greek Tragedy

Introduction

Greek tragedy, at its most essential, is not simply a story of suffering. It is a story of a particular kind of suffering — one that arises from the collision between a person of considerable stature and a fatal internal flaw that they either cannot see or cannot resist.

The great Aristotelian conception of tragedy requires a protagonist of high social standing, an hamartia or fatal error, the arousal of hubris — that peculiar Greek sin of overweening pride and presumption — and ultimately a nemesis or divine retribution that brings the figure low, often in proportion to the heights from which they fell.

David Farrar: Judicial Conduct Panel to be appointed


Paul Goldsmith announced:

A Judicial Conduct Panel will inquire into and report on the alleged conduct of acting District Court Judge Ema Aitken, Acting Attorney-General Paul Goldsmith says.

“Judge Aitken’s alleged conduct at the Northern Club on 22 November 2024 was the subject of a preliminary examination by the Judicial Conduct Commissioner.

In November 2024, District Court Judge “Ema” Aitken, her former-doctor husband David Galler and King’s Counsel Michael Reed KC gate-crashed a private function at Auckland city’s Northern Club. The function was a Christmas get together of the New Zealand First political party. Aitken’s real name is Elizabeth Margaret Aitken. “Ema” appears to be a truncation designed to make herself seem cool.

Point of Order: Commissioner recommends panel inquire into Judge’s conduct

The Judicial Conduct Commissioner has recommended a Judicial Conduct Panel be established to inquire into and report on the alleged conduct of acting District Court Judge Ema Aitken in an incident last November, Attorney-General Judith Collins said today.
