David Farrar: Disgusting racism

RNZ reports:

Auckland mayor Wayne Brown referred to an RNZ staff member of Indian descent as “a Muslim terrorist” and commented on his beard as the man escorted him into the building for an interview.

Brown said the comments were a “fumbled attempt at humour”.

RNZ said the man was greeting Brown as he arrived at RNZ’s Auckland offices for an appearance on the Afternoons programme on Monday.

The staff member apologised to Brown for the wait, mentioning security being tight in the building, an RNZ spokesperson said in a statement.

“The Mayor responded with a comment along the lines of ‘security can’t be very tight if we’re being escorted by a Muslim terrorist’,” the RNZ spokesperson said.

Referring to a stranger as a terrorist because of their skin colour is racist. It is disgusting. It isn’t funny. I’m not sure if it would have been better or worse if the man actually was Muslim, but it doesn’t matter. It is simply racist and wrong.

David Farrar runs Curia Market Research, a specialist opinion polling and research agency, and the popular Kiwiblog where this article was sourced. He previously worked in the Parliament for eight years, serving two National Party Prime Ministers and three Opposition.

How is a gaffe by Wayne so much worse than everything that comes out of the mouths of te partly Maori representatives and many of the greens members?
Is it because I’m not one of the special chosen people myself that I’m the only one asking this question?

Islam is a religion, not a race; and most Indians are Hindu, not Muslim.
Too stupid to be offensive, like Irish jokes.

Oh come on. If the guy was clearly Indian, as apparently the case, in the context of the security comment, a legitimate crack. Wry humour is or was an inherent part of our culture.

Everything is taken so seriously. We mustn’t cause offence. When I think back to jokes told amongst the girls in my mid seventies 6th form common room, no one would dare utter them today, let alone laugh at them. Feels like we’re getting almost prissy in our disapproval. It was not Wayne’s best attempt at humour, but I sincerely doubt he set out to offend. Is this really the best the msm can do for news in this country?

He may have been of Pakistani heritage Barend, so maybe was a Muslim!

Agree with Anon 4-53. TPM and Greens utter real racist rants and that's ok. WB just makes a poor attempt at humour and all hell breaks loose. We are very quickly getting very precious as a society. We can't laugh at ourselves any more. Think back to those good old TV shows like Alf Garnett, Archie Bunker and Love thy Neighbour. Everyone had a laugh and it was taken in the manner it was given
Come on David, lighten up

Yawn - another public or prominent official makes a complete prat of themselves.
If we tarred and feathered ALL of them,
That would be A LOT of tar and feathers...
