In March 2023, Green co-leader and then-Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence, Marama Davidson, openly declared:

“I know who causes violence in the world. It is white cis men… who cause violence in the world.”

This wasn’t a slip of the tongue. It reflects her core belief, rooted in Critical Race Theory. In Davidson’s twisted worldview, white cis men are guilty of all violence — not because they commit it, but because they hold power. Any violence by Māori or Pasifika men is ultimately the fault of white men and the “oppressive structures” they created. Personal responsibility is erased. Race and sex are everything.

Green party deputy leader Marama Davidson felt emboldened and enabled to proclaim such a divisive statement because that is the tenor and character of today’s culture wars. Her statement invited a “pile on”, outrage and contempt from many quarters including, of course, white straight politicians.

Why did she do it? Davidson gives strong indicators that she actually believes that white males are the foremost perpetrators of violence and she now perceives greater political mileage is to be gained by advocating social/racial issues as opposed to the conservation issues that you would expect from a member of a “Green” political party.

Davidson surely is a true watermelon green!

In his first two months as Prime Minister Chris Hipkins impressed for his directness, clarity and determination, and the assured way in which he transitioned into his new role. His everyman style, from the hoodie to the more than occasional meat pie, won many positive comments. The methodical but decisive way in which he dismantled or pushed to one side those aspects of Ardernism, so dear to the Labour Party, but increasingly egregious to the public, has been impressive. Last night on TV1 News she said, “…overwhelmingly it is men who are the biggest threat to women and children when it comes to violence and I needed to make that clarification.”

The chief human rights commissioner writes, as if we all eagerly awaited his insights, that he wants to provide a human rights perspective on the issues raised by Parker’s visit. He adds, in Uriah Heep fashion, that he does this “from where I sit with my multiple privileges and advantages”.

Oh, please. Breast-beating liberal white guilt has rarely been more cringingly displayed. We can only hope his $365,000 salary eases the pain.

She has in fact refused to apologise and has instead “clarified” what she meant as she strode down Princes Street away from Albert Park after supporting the violence against women who were just trying to speak.

Bryce Edwards: Bryce Edwards: Ardern is right to insist on ethical standards, even on chocolate endorsements

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was right to question Marama Davidson’s endorsement of Whittaker’s chocolate. The rule forbidding ministers from endorsing products or services is a basic protection against corruption. It helps maintain the impartiality of ministers who have enormous individual power when it comes to regulations that directly impact businesses.

Davidson, who is Associate Minister of Housing, purchased a bunch of the Whittaker’s “Creamy Milk” chocolate bars – rebranded for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori as “Miraka Kirīmi” – and posed with them on the steps of Parliament, stating that she loved the company.

Ardern asked the Cabinet Office to remind her Minister of the Cabinet Manual rules, which clearly stipulate “no Minister should endorse in any media any product or service”. Davidson was initially defiant, standing her ground, but eventually relented and edited her social media post to remove the company’s name from her endorsement.

The conservatives fumed that business gets subsides when they really should be doing a lot of the heavy lifting themselves

All in all, for something that was billed as significant, or as a moment in history, it all added up to yet more waffle that may or may not come to pass.

Mike Butler: Parihaka, the Green Party, and rape

For a few years there has been a call to replace Guy Fawke’s Day with a Parihaka Day to commemorate November 5, 1881, when government troops evicted 1600 people from a village built on confiscated land between Mount Taranaki and the Tasman Sea.

This year the Green Party announced that Marama Davidson will re-enter the Maori Party’s Te ra o Parihaka Bill into Parliament’s Member’s Bill Ballot to establish a further grievance day following Land Wars Day (aka Tribal Rebellions Day) on October 28, and of course Waitangi Day on February 6. (1)
