Polls dip for Nats but govt sticks to its guns on growth – and the restoration of “mauri” (but how is it measured?) plays a part

The phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid” was coined by James Carville, a strategist involved in Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential election campaign against George H W Bush.

It worked for Clinton, whose team used it successfully to unseat Bush the elder, despite the fact that 90 per cent of the country approved of the job that the incumbent had been doing just a year before the election.

The dearth of media statements from the Beehive today prompted Point of Order’s ministerial monitors to engage in a quick check.

Yep. There are 30 potential sources of statements, speeches and what-have-you, when we count Chris Luxon’s executive team. Twenty are ministers, eight are ministers outside of cabinet, and two are Parliamentary under-secretaries.

Govt is aiming to get things done faster – including the sales of Kiwi land to foreign investors

Our government has been busy shaping new initiatives to ensure the improvement of our general wellbeing. Essentially it’s a matter of buying more of this and that and having things done faster, including the selling of land to foreigners.

It is gratifying to find that in two cases of getting more and/or having things done faster, no dollar signs can be found in the press statements. This suggests taxpayers will not be called on to do whatever is being done to improve our wellbeing in those cases.
