David Farrar: Labour’s unfortunate experiment

In 2017, the geniuses of the Labour Party decided to have an experiment. They said, let’s cut the prison population by 30%. Someone (hopefully) said, you mean by reducing serious crime by 30%? But the geniuses said, no no – just cut the prison population by 30%, regardless of whether people are committing serious violent and sexual crimes.

It was the law & order version of the unfortunate experiment. They opened the doors, and New Zealanders suffered the consequences.

Violent offences increased from 50,110 in 2017 to 76,808 in 2023 – an increase of 53%.

Sexual offences increased from 5,952 in 2017 to 7,312 in 2023 – an increase of 23%.

This is the price New Zealanders paid for Labour’s unfortunate experiment of trying to empty the prisons.

David Farrar runs Curia Market Research, a specialist opinion polling and research agency, and the popular Kiwiblog where this article was sourced. He previously worked in the Parliament for eight years, serving two National Party Prime Ministers and three Opposition Leaders.

You can add to the crime statistics an 80% increase in gang membership and regions in NZ, such as the East Coast, Hawkes Bay, Horowhenua and parts of Waikato being virtually run by organized crime.

But it is going to be worse again next time Labour are elected, as their two coalition partners want to close prisons altogether and defund the police.

As with any experiment more conclusions can be drawn.
So as a corollary you could argue that lifting prison population by a further 25% we can reduce crime even further.
The cost needs to be considered relative to the benefit and what is happening to those at an educational level in the prison

Ardern, davis et al all have blood on their hands for this Davidi mo. How many of those let out (who shouldn't of been let out) went on to murder others? Lots. I can find lots of examples.
Labour are responsible for those murders imo. How could you NOT come to the conclusion that by letting these people out of prison there would be no increase in crime.

I'm no expert in this but even I knew the outcome, actually a 5 yo could probably figure it out. Now here is the problem, that's about the age that the far left are operating at....the hair brained stupidity and irrational decisions of preschoolers. Explains a lot when you put it into perspective.

Don't forget that after the Christchurch massacre, Ardern spent $250M taking guns off the law abiding public, but refused to let the police break down the pallisades of the gang houses and take their weapons.
Result, the proliferation of guns in gang hands with firearm " incidents " now a daily occur occurrence.
