DTNZ: Trump raises China tariffs to 125%, implements 90-day pause for other countries

US President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, up from 104%, effective immediately, while authorising a 90-day pause for other countries affected by new duties.

The move follows sweeping tariffs imposed on dozens of trading partners, triggering retaliatory measures from China, the European Union, and Canada.

China raised tariffs on US goods to 84% and restricted 18 US companies, while the EU announced 25% duties on various US imports.

Global markets reacted sharply, with plunges in stock prices, oil, and US Treasury bonds.

Trump said the tariffs would remain for now and signaled more may come.

Clever.

Well well. Trump blinked first. Amazing the power of the bond markets, as Liz Truss discovered to her cost. That, and the fact that British conservatives understand how the real world works a lot better than American conservatives ever will. Roll on the mid-terms.
