Melissa was listed as a category 5 hurricane. Based on a storms sustained wind speeds, that is the highest on the hurricane measuring scale.
The US National Hurricane Centre reported that Melissa carried sustained wind speeds of 298km/h when it slammed into Jamaica.
By way of a comparison, Cyclone Gabrielle that hit New Zealand in 2023, had highest recorded winds speeds of 159.3km/h off Coromandel Peninsular and 146.3km/h at Cape Turnagain, Hawkes Bay.
Melissa’s wind speeds were double that!
Slamming into Jamaica with its ferocious winds and extreme rainfall, Melissa caused severe flooding and major infrastructure damage and left most of the country without power. By good fortune no deaths were recorded in Jamaica.
Neighbouring Haiti was not so fortunate, reporting 20 deaths.
As Melissa moved away from Jamaica windspeeds decreased and Melissa was downgraded to a category three hurricane.
But as is the norm these days, any exceptional weather event immediately engenders a finger wagging, I told you so, frenzy of claims of “Climate Change is the cause!”
We are told by preeminent scientists the world is in a huge mess, we are destroying our planet, climate change is an international crisis and there is an “overwhelming scientific consensus” proving it is so!
And these “The end is nigh” scientists have a huge ally in the MSM!
The MSM just love serious weather events, they sell more papers and increase viewer numbers; They are mana from heaven!
It is a sad reality of the human condition that bad news is big news! Headlines are there to sell papers, and it seems that danger or even death is more profitable to the press than hope or success.

In UK in 2009, extracts of emails hacked from the accounts of researchers at the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit in the UK were leaked online, appearing to show that some of the world’s foremost climate scientists had conspired to exaggerate warming trends, suppress the publication of conflicting research and to delete evidence systematically that conflicted with established models.
Alexander Baker, Research Scientist, University of Reading co-authored an article part of which was published in the NZ Herald last week and that prompted me to write this article. Baker stated “As the planet warms, this violent strengthening is becoming more common.” Followed by “In the case of Melissa, the fingerprints of climate change are visible on many of the factors that made it such a devastating storm.”
Adding “Recent research suggests that since the early 1980s, warmer seas and a more, moist atmosphere means these conditions are becoming more common. These trends can’t be explained by natural variability. It seems human-caused climate change is significantly increasing the probability of rapid intensification.”
What the MSM does not inform us, is that the oceans of the world are warming, not because of man made emissions but predominantly from natural causes. Natural causes like undersea volcanic activity! 96% of all CO2 comes from natural sources and the oceans contain about 70% of those natural sources.
All too often climate change researchers/promotors are labelling “climate change denialism” as having stemmed from fossil fuel companies, right wing politicians and even some nation states.
But do we see the climate change counter view published by the MSM? Never!
A few years back I did find a very interesting counter view.
Judith Curry an American climatologist and former chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology, had research published confirming human activity had created negative effects on climate!
But Judith now states – “It’s a manufactured scientific consensus,” She says “…scientists have an incentive to exaggerate risk to pursue “fame and fortune.”
Well, you would think Judith would be able to discern climate change truth from climate change fiction because she became known for dispersing alarm about climate change!
The Media loved her when she published a study that purported to show a dramatic increase in hurricane intensity.
“We found that the percentage of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes had doubled,” says Curry. “This was picked up by the media,” and then climate alarmists realized, wow, here is the way to spread the alarm.
Tie extreme weather events to global warming!
Curry’s concern about more intense hurricanes simply gave the climate alarmists more motivation.
“I was adopted by the environmental advocacy groups and the alarmists and I was treated like a rock star,” Curry recounted. “Flown all over the place to meet with politicians.”
But then some researchers pointed out gaps in her research — years with low levels of hurricanes.
“Like a good scientist, I investigated,” said Curry. She found that the critics were right. “Part of it was bad data. Part of it is natural climate variability.”
Natural climate variability!
Curry was the unusual researcher who looked at criticism of her work, attempted to prove them wrong but actually concluded “they had a point.”
Not surprisingly, other climate researchers weren’t so open-minded. Alarmist scientists’ aggressive attempts to hide data suggesting climate change is not a crisis was revealed in leaked emails.
Curry said alarmists resorted to avoiding Freedom of Information Act requests and tried to get supportive journal editors fired.
This made Curry realize that there is a “climate change industry” set up to reward alarm and apprehension.
“The origins go back to the U.N. environmental program said Curry. Some U.N. officials were motivated by “anti-capitalism, hatred of the oil companies and they seized on the climate change issue to move their policies along.”

- The IPCC wasn’t required to focus on any benefits of warming.
- The IPCC’s mandate was to look for dangerous man-made climate change.
- Then the national funding agencies directed all the funding … assuming there are dangerous impacts.
“That is how “manufactured consensus” began. “Even if a climate sceptic did get funding, it was harder to publish because most journal editors are alarmists” said Curry.
Curry was amazed and saddened that the editor of the journal “Science” wrote “The time for debate has ended.”
“What kind of message does that give?” asked Curry.
Simple. – “Promote the alarming papers! Don’t even send the sceptical ones out for review. If you wanted to advance in your career, like be at a prestigious university and get a big salary, have big laboratory space, get lots of grant funding, be director of an institute, there was clearly one path to go.”
And that’s what we have now: a massive inter – governmental funded climate alarmism complex!
We must stop tolerating incorrect, fabricated, extreme climate modelling scenarios to construct doom-laden predictions that allow MP’s and government lackeys to scare the public. All of which is employed to justify outlandish and unnecessary government spending.
In New Zealand an eye-watering amount of money has been poured into the black hole of methane research as attempts are made to change the outcome of livestock digestion, instead of accepting that such emissions are part of a long-established natural cycle that is essentially harmless.
For me the big question isn’t “Is climate change real?”
What the world needs from politicians and scientists is honesty and truthfulness around the question, “HOW MUCH OF CLIMATE CHANGE IS MAN MADE?”

Flagrant propaganda cured my interest in the Christchurch Press many years ago after discovering it employed a raft of full time climate alarmists. Everyday they pecked away on their keyboards spreading climate falsehoods and alarm to those that lack the capability of critical thinking. Pee Kay justifiably condemns the corrupt MSM’s part it plays in promoting the greatest lie ever told.
