Sir Dieter Helm calls for a radical rethink of UK energy policy

In a long essay, Sir Dieter Helm argues that UK energy policy is failing in its core purpose of delivering affordable and secure power. In response, the UK’s leading energy economist argues that Britain needs a radical new approach, including repeal of the Climate Change Act, an end to legally binding carbon budgets, a renewed role for domestic gas, and an electricity market built around firm power rather than intermittent generation. Helm also rejects claims pushed by the renewables lobby that challenging the AR7 and AR8 CfDs, Richard Tice and Reform’s policy, would destroy Britain’s credibility with investors.

Senior Ministers agree with Blair’s Net Zero analysis

One of Starmer’s closest political allies, Pat McFadden, privately backed Tony Blair’s criticism of the government’s North Sea and net zero policies, newly released files have revealed.

Union members defect to Reform

Trade union members are now as likely to support Reform UK as Labour, according to “damning” polling that their own leaders say proves “the working class have abandoned” Sir Keir Starmer’s party. Union bosses blame Labour’s Net Zero policies.

Burnham wavers on Net Zero

Andy Burnham has insisted he has an “open mind” on drilling for more North Sea oil and gas in the latest about-turn of his campaign. The Mayor of Greater Manchester said he did not have “a fixed position” as Ed Miliband faces pressure to scrap a ban on new licences. Mr Burnham’s new-found openness to drilling suggests he is now distancing himself from some of the Energy Secretary’s net-zero agenda, which has angered the unions, whose support could prove pivotal in an upcoming Labour leadership contest.

Trump plans $700 million in new coal support

US President Donald Trump is planning to use Cold War-era national defence powers to send nearly $700 million to support coal facilities, according to a White House official. The funds will upgrade more than a dozen coal power plants, build a massive West Coast coal export terminal and match corporate funds to build new power plants as the administration eyes the domestic need to sustain ‌power-hungry artificial-intelligence data centers and aims to marginalise foreign adversaries that hold large fossil fuel reserves.
