Yvonne Van Dongen: The Boomer Bashing Vote

Young overseas voters urged to counter Old New Zealand

Ageism is alive and voting in this election.

Some of it is implicit as in the Opportunity Party’s annual land tax policy that includes the family home and the Greens’ policy of a capital acquisitions tax on large gifts and inheritances. Meanwhile Labour proposes a capital gains tax on investment property and ACT would like to raise the retirement age to 67 plus limit the winter hardship payment to beneficiaries and people over 65 with Community Services Cards.

Mike's Minute: Why are we concerned about the age of workers?

We've got more ageism, this time in education.

Unions are "concerned" as more teachers work past retirement age.

This in part is the trouble with unions.

Eliora: Maturity Can Have Good Advantages

‘Old(er)’ age has a lot going for it. Maturity has additional advantages, markedly if you are a leader, such as Donald Trump or Winston Peters. Their maturity gives wisdom, drive, history of things to avoid, opportunity to develop beliefs, more time to be comfortable in their own skin, a tendency to see the broader perspective, determination to leave a legacy and the confidence to make fast-paced, good, decisions. It’s not their first rodeo!

Brendan O'Neill, The Maoist cruelty behind the trans crusade

The ousting of a 90-year-old charity worker for querying preferred pronouns is a new low for woke.

Sometimes the hilarity of woke can blind us to its brutality. We lose ourselves in ‘wokeness gone mad’ stories and lose sight of how cruel wokeness can be. We’re so busy getting a kick from viral clips of some privileged pink-haired kid wailing at work because he was referred to as ‘him’ rather than ‘them’ that we forget what a baleful impact this cranky ideology can have on real people’s lives. The chilling case of the Californian charity worker Fran Itkoff should bring us crashing back down to Earth. It’s hard to think of any recent cancellation as brutish and unforgiving as this one. Mirthful it is not.

Henry Armstrong: How the Ardern Government and Its Allies are Dumping on Us Oldies

The Ardern government’s recently-announced housing and punitive tax policies will have a significant impact on New Zealand’s seniors and are clearly ageist in their outcomes.

Anyone over the age of 70 years in New Zealand today (especially if you are male and of European descent), can be forgiven for feeling that somehow, after a lifetime of struggle, commitment to, and hard work in the interests of our country, New Zealand, we have suddenly become “the enemy”!

Green Party MPs, almost to a person, condemn “old white men” as somehow being responsible for all of the ills of modern-day New Zealand society. Julie-Ann Genter’s infamous statement to a class of school children in Christchurch (aged around 10 years) that “old white men” needed to move aside from their domination of boards (she did not specify which boards-charities, SOEs, closely- held family companies, Stock Exchange listings), as some kind of cleansing process after which organisations would be refreshed and renewed.

Henry Armstrong: The Ardern Government and Ageism - fact or fallacy?

This article is purely speculative, a conspiracy theory if you will. But as an over 70, I cannot help but feel just a little uneasy at what I see and read in today’s media, regarding us oldies. What do footpaths; access to health; and taxation, all have in common? Read on!

Several recent comments by the Prime Minister , members of her Cabinet and her professional advisers  during the COVID19 pandemic crisis  suggest that lurking just below the surface of the political landscape may be an ageist agenda? That the elderly pose an economic burden on future generations?
