Absolutely spot on. You have got in dead right.

We were taught to swim, in the sea, by the teachers at Raumati Primary School.

We were not taught "te reo"

In the 1950s the primary school I was at was opposite a public pool.In the summer terms we had frequent class visits with direct swimming instruction. I was particularly proud of my swimming certificate I earned.I had it displayed on my bedroom wall. There were stickers you could earn to put on it as you passed the necessary requirements starting with treading water, lying on your back ,doggy paddle 10 yards, breast stroke 20 yards, and so on up to swimming two lengths. I practiced these challenges after school hours. But those were the bad days of repressive education ! My own children had to go to private swimming lessons to learn to swim. Although their school had its own pool they were not taught swimming in any sort of orderly fashion as in the old school tradition.
