Point of Order: The good thing about artificial intelligence is what it might do for human intelligence

As the man who seized Boris’s crown, Britain’s PM Rishi Sunak has his work cut out.

But his latest brainwave – making the UK a global centre for regulation of the new wave of artificial intelligence (AI) – is unlikely to help.

While recent times suggest that more detailed prescription is not the way to fruitful innovation, the confidence of politicians, bureaucrats and general experts has not diminished.

Brendan O'Neill: The revenge of the technocrats

Rishi Sunak’s u-turn on scrapping EU laws should worry all who believe in democracy.

So much for the bonfire of EU laws. Rishi Sunak’s government has ditched plans to erase all EU legislation from the UK statute books by the end of 2023. It was his big promise during his leadership campaign in August last year. A ‘Ready for Rishi’ video showed piles of paper marked ‘EU legislation’ being fed into a shredder. ‘In his first 100 days as prime minister, Rishi Sunak will review or repeal post-Brexit EU laws’, the vid said. ‘Keep Brexit safe, vote Rishi Sunak’, it continued. Now he’s backtracked. Now around 800 EU-era laws are due to be revoked, leaving thousands on the books. So, seven years after 17.4million of us voted to leave the EU, we’re still labouring under EU legislation, and will be for a long time to come.

Wendy Geus: Courageous Leader Tackles Social Justice Issue Head On

Whilst our media ban opinions which contradict their ‘correct world view’

Compare and contrast. Our government and media have brazenly condoned the abuse of UK women’s rights activist Posie Parker by transgender protesters. But UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has ramped up his support for women’s rights, speaking out against the trans extremism movement where words like ‘pregnant woman’ and ‘mother’ are being censored, replaced by ‘pregnant people’.

Refusing to adhere to the media’s politically correct version of the ‘truth’ around identity politics, Rishi Sunak, in speaking out, is trouncing Keir Starmer, who still struggles (like our PM) to define a woman.

Brendan O'Neill: The knives are out for Brexit – again

Is anyone else feeling less than reassured by Rishi Sunak’s promise that Brexit is safe? The PM has denied reports that his government wants to put Britain on the path to a Swiss-style arrangement with the European Union. This would entail being outside the EU but making payments to it, aligning with Single Market rules, and even agreeing to abide by certain EU laws, as Switzerland does. In short, BRINO (Brexit In Name Only), the old Theresa May vision of being mostly out of the EU but a little bit in. ‘Soft Brexit’, as Remainers like to call it.

Mike Hosking: We should admire success, not belittle it

One of our more unfortunate traits has been on display this week with the arrival of Rishi Sunak.

It turns out he's rich. And when it turns out someone is rich we need to make a thing of it.

We made a thing of it when Sir John Key got the top job as well. Chris Luxon got a bit of a left-wing going over because he was, God forbid, successful too, and with more than one house.

Sunak it has been proclaimed, about 100 times over, is richer than King Charles, as though that’s any sort of comparison to make.
