The Broadcasting Standards Authority is now formally considering additional complaints against The Platform’s founder and CEO, Sean Plunket. Complainant Richard Faneslow’s original complaint is that Plunket’s “mumbo jumbo” epithet to describe Māori tikanga (mystical Māori rules for how Māori should go about daily life) was RACIST. Fanselow’s additional complaints allege that Plunket uses hurty words.

On 17 November 2025, Sean Plunket, Founder and CEO of media channel The Platform, complained to New Zealand’s Chief Ombudsman, John Allen.

Plunket’s asked Allen to “urgently investigate and review” the Broadcasting Standards Authority’s refusal to provide Plunket with all correspondence and documentation relating to the BSA’s “Provisional Interlocutory Decision” that the BSA has jurisdiction to consider complaints against The Platform. Plunket had formally requested that information from the BSA, under the Official Information Act 1982. Here’s Plunket’s request to the Ombudsman:

Una Jagose, the country’s Solicitor-General, has issued revised prosecution guidelines after the original October 2024 guidelines suggested prosecutors consider Māori ethnicity when deciding on charges.

The backlash led to widespread accusations of endorsing racial bias. The revised guidelines focus on “individualised factors” like poverty, abuse, and lack of education. However, they still encourage prosecutors to understand tikanga Māori and promote te reo Māori.
