In the 1920s, probably not trusting returned servicemen to get pissed and also have guns, they enacted an updated gun law. This required registration of guns, permits, and a crackdown on handguns. And this was also ignored for the next few decades; something shown to be glaringly true when the Police audited the firearms register and found it almost entirely inaccurate. It was a time of little crime and violence in New Zealand.
In 1983 the Arms Act was introduced; the intention was to vet owners of guns rather than the guns themselves. Other measures to (ahem) ‘keep everyone safe’ were also included. Like good little unthinking slaves, the general public nodded their heads and assumed they were indeed being protected from gun crime. Which then promptly rose exponentially. A one-off tragedy in Aramoana inexplicably led to some foolishness; a newly elected government felt it was a chance to show how incredibly important they were so they enacted restrictive gun laws – to keep everyone safe. Phew!
Other one-off tragedies in other parts of the world (Port Arthur in Australia, and Dunblane, Scotland) saw some idiot judge engage in infantile hand-wringing; the Thorp Report; and subsequent legislation was enacted further restricting gun ownership in New Zealand. But now we were even safer don-cha-know! Phew!
In 2019 yet another one-off (undertaken by a foreigner against, well, other foreigners) led to Jacinda Ardern’s Christmases coming at once and she decided to protect the general public once and for all. There was a campaign to hand in guns which all sorts of weak, feeble slaves dutifully did. To keep us really safe; and I mean really, really safe, comrades! Phew! The only dissenting voice was David Seymour (taking time out from his campaign to murder babies and grannies). Needless to say, gun crime soared – to its highest in New Zealand history – but at least we’re all “safe” now (goddammit!); our weekly chocolate ration increasing from 30 g to 20 g, so to speak.
Whilst all this was taking place, all the way back to the 1983 legislation, there was one (ahem) lonely voice. One person (ahem) kept suggesting we adopt American-style gun laws whereby everyone without a felony conviction can own guns at their house, and about their person if they so wish. Something that would ‘actually’ keep people safe from gun-toting criminals. It goes without saying everyone – without exception – I’ve suggested this to has viewed such a proposal with horror; the result of a lifetime of anaesthetisation against “thinking”, and indoctrination to obey “Government” and accept that every government diktat (from speed limits to vaccinations to health and safety laws) automatically “protects” them.
And so to Sunday night and a dead body lying on the pavement of Ponsonby road.
I don’t know the victim; they never heard me calling for abolishing gun laws and allowing concealed carry; never expressed horror at such suggestions. Then there was that two seconds when their life flashed before them but they couldn’t defend themselves. A lifetime of simply relying on Jacinda Ardern and the Police to keep them “safe” failed them.

My leftie friends keep telling me that ' Jacinda has good intentions'. I'm unsure if this is true or not. One thing I can tell you is even if I gave ardern benefit of doubt pretty much if she actually did have good intentions if she did the exact opposite of what she thought was correct we would be in a much much better position as a country. Fact!
Yep. Just one measure of how the public have been very poorly served by politicians over the years. To think that if one awakes in the night to face an intruder in one's home, the use of a firearm against said shitbag would result in one being in more legal strife than the F*ng intruder! So who is the real threat to our inalienable rights?
The issue of gun control is endemic in the West & has nothing to do with public safety & everything to do with control. The "authorities" cant control an armed population & fear uprisings when they start to tighten the noose on the globalist agenda they're pushing, particularly in NZ where we have less than 12,500 frontline Police officers & a similar amount of regular force military personnel.
After having lived in the US for almost 20 years & carried a handgun in my truck at all times (never used it), I have this to say about the issues surrounding firearms in that country. Firstly, it is not a "gun" problem, it is a problem with mental health that it not screened during the permit procedure. Secondly, the vast majority of gun crimes occur in either the inner city or the black neighbourhoods & are almost always gang related, black on black or black on white opportunist crime like robberies & car jackings. Did I feel safer carrying a firearm...yes, definitely. Would I have used it if confronted by an armed assailant...yes & I spent much time & ammo at the range sharpening my skills with handgun, shotgun & rifle in order to be effective.
I support revising the gun laws here including concealed carry of handguns & like you, I am confident that a suitably armed & trained populace is the best deterrent to crime with the following caveats...
1) Stringent background checks including criminal & mental health evaluations followed by certification on your weapon to include safety, field stripping & maintenance & most importantly marksmanship (gun control is all about hitting what you are aiming at !)
2) Continued certification on a yearly or bi annual schedule to maintain your skills & to allow instructors to look for warning signs of any instability that may indicate you could be a danger.
Given the increasing child & youth crime rate, I would also advocate for reintroducing Compulsory Military Training for ALL kids between the ages of 17 & 19 for the following reasons...
It would address the increasing problems of physical & mental health in our youth by screening them & supplying the necessary free treatment & support.
The military aspect of the training would not only instil self discipline & a sense of pride in their achievements & give our armed forces a much needed boost, but would significantly increase our ability to respond to Civil emergencies by providing training in first aid/triage, transportation & logistics for evacuation, catering, house clearing (rescue) & evaluation of hazards (turn off electricity, water & gas etc), rapid deployment of evacuation camps to supply shelter, food & medical assistance & a captive work force to assist in the clean-up.
Candidates should also be assessed for their aptitude & given the appropriate training & in exchange for their 2 years service be provided FREE tertiary education upon leaving with an emphasis on the careers desperately in need of new recruits like medical, emergency services (Fire Service, EMT, Civil Defence) & the Police & with a percentage offered incentives to join the NZDF Regular Force.
All graduates would stay in the Military Reserves & could be deployed in their own Province to assist in Civil emergencies.
This suggestion faces two hurdles...
Firstly, NZ would need to become a Constitutional Republic with a Codified Constitution as people are more inclined to pledge allegiance to their own Constitution & countrymen as opposed to some jug eared clown from England & a Crown that steals our wealth while providing nothing in return.
Secondly, the she/shim/theys would need their own individual units depending on which gender they subscribed to on any given day (we could call them the "Fairy Brigades") but it is unclear as to what value they would provide or how much of a laughing stock on the international stage NZ would become if we did so.
An amusing and insightful comment Hazel. I am a former SAS and Artillery officer with 3 active service campaigns under my belt. I strongly support a 2 year Singapore style national service requirement for all fit youths 18-20 yrs, for the reasons you suggest. And a much longer course for those boys of a more tender age, who seem destined to be the next generation’s permanent prison population. Prevention is much superior to reaction. But, sigh, the rot is much too deep for any practical approach to be implemented now.
