Sensational new scientific findings have blown holes in the climate hoax opinion that humans need to give up eating meat to save the planet. The effect of methane (CH4), a minor ‘greenhouse’ gas, have been grossly exaggerated to suggest that animal farming poses a significant threat to the global climate. But the invented threat relies on multiplying by around ten the length of time that CH4 stays in the atmosphere – an invention under Global Warming Potential 100 know as GWP100 that is in widespread use in activist circles, including the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. At current emission levels, five Italian scientists predict 54% less warming than under GWP100, while small decreasing emissions, possible with some changes in animal diets, produce only tiny amounts of claimed warming.

My first farm was mainly old sand dunes with thirty to fifty mm’s of good soil on the tops.  We farmed cows and pigs, collected the manure and spread it on the ridges.  Within a few years we built the soil humus to 200 to 300mm’s.  We called it humus or topsoil. Today, we call it “carbon”.

In fact, we built thousands of tonnes of carbon all taken from atmosphere.  It was a ratio of 8:1 – it took eight tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere to build one tonne of carbon in the soil. We call it ‘sequestering’.  It all happens via photosynthesis and the carbon cycle you learnt at school.  CO2 in the atmosphere gets taken in by plants, animals eat plants and burp methane back into the atmosphere that eventually becomes CO2 that the next lot of plants need.

Our politicians continue to parrot the fallacy that livestock emissions contribute “nearly half” of the global warming that New Zealand supposedly causes each and every year.

This estimate is, of course, based on several erroneous assumptions – one of which is that each herd of cattle keeps adding more methane to the atmosphere every year.

The reality is that a ‘steady-state’ herd produces steady state methane. For every new molecule it emits an older molecule expires, and there is no increase at all.

Robin Grieve: Government’s climate plans for livestock emissions in tatters

James Shaw has been given much credit for setting the foundations for enduring climate policy. An independent expert Climate Commission would steer the ship and the Government legally bound by the revised Climate Change Response act, would enact the policies required to transform New Zealand painlessly and effortlessly into a carbon neutral happy prosperous green society.

The weakness of Shaw’s foundations and the nativity of the concept on which they are based, have just been exposed by a Climate Commission report which has torpedoed the Government’s plans to price livestock biological emissions.

All scientists and many non scientists would agree that there is climate change. 

Climate change has been occurring for millions, in fact billions of years. Nearly all of it without any human influence. Now suddenly, according to the climate alarmists, humans are responsible for climate change, even though Carbon Dioxide levels have reached as high as 7000ppm in the past. They are at a very low 410ppm at present. Was it all those dinosaurs emitting CO2? 

What used to be called global warming was changed to climate change because from 1998 the earth has actually cooled slightly, though the cooling has increased in recent years, especially in the northern hemisphere. The cooling was an embarrassment for the climate alarmists. 

Climate change covers anything.

Danny Simms: The Carbon Cycle, livestock emissions and land use

Since writing on this topic – see HERE - I have circulated my paper widely to all parliamentary politicians, news outlets and agricultural lobby groups. The replies I received and discussions I had with the responders showed a real lack of acceptance or even understanding of the carbon cycle. In this paper I try to address this and look further to other serious policies affecting agriculture.

Four issues stood out: 

1)     No understanding of the essential place CO2 has in the growing of all food.

2)     Not recognising that CO2 is one of the trace gasses of the atmosphere

3)     the belief that CO2 and methane are different issues 

4)     an utter lack of appreciation of the uptake of CO2 by growing pasture. 

Owen Jennings: Cars versus Cows

What is the difference between a car and a cow?  Both can get you from A to B but the car adds Greenhouse Gas (GHG) to the atmosphere doing so while the cow doesn’t. The GHG produced by the car hangs around in the atmosphere for centuries, apparently, whereas the GHG from the cow is largely gone in 10 years.

The car’s contribution accumulates.  The cow’s contribution revolves – she simply replenishes what is lost.  The car’s contribution keeps building up, adding to the quantum of GHG as the car goes further.  The cow’s contribution stays static with no additional GHG produced.
